Can we (and should we) pursue everything we can dream of? 😉 I can easily envision a Prime Video TV series spun out from Fallout based on this concept! I know the topic of Mars exploration irritates some of us, but I really appreciate the creativity some of our brightest minds are investing in imagining how this could work! NASA and other organizations have been exploring innovative concepts for Martian habitats that leverage both Martian soil and inflatable structures. One approach involves using 3D printing technology to create structures from Martian soil, or "regolith," which shield against radiation and provide structural support. This method, known as "Marscrete" production, involves mixing Martian soil with binders to create a concrete-like material suitable for building habitats. Another concept focuses on inflatable habitats, which offer significant advantages in terms of transport and deployment from Earth to Mars. These habitats can be compactly packed for launch and then expanded to provide spacious living areas once on Mars. They are designed to be covered with regolith for added protection against radiation and to maintain internal pressure. Combining these technologies, some proposals envision habitats with inflatable structures reinforced by 3D-printed walls using Martian soil, offering a hybrid solution that maximizes the benefits of both approaches. I love the space program and the pursuit of so many nations toward first runner status for living on other planets. The technological innovation process has encouraged pushing the envelope. Who knows space may truly be the frontier.

Looks like something ants have been doing forever! There really is nothing new under the sun. 😊

It's an interesting proposition. But if we're truly trying to find ways of colonising other planets we need to move on from CGI ideo and try these projects IRL. With real objectives concerning terraforming (which we can't even properly do here), habitation experiments in harsh environments, farming techniques in low-zero gravity and the possible creation of a permanent moon base. Until we have these bases covered don't even think in stepping off the planet. Probes are far safer and cheaper.

We don't have to make things look expensive and difficult, like the habitation concept in this video. This technology is not only hard to achieve, with so many vulnerable links in the chain, it also does not exist at present. Building pressurized fabric domes over craters, several hundred meters in diameter with microterraformed interiors, with powered on-demand radiation shield, will bypass the need for such cumbersome construction techniques.

After reading the excellent book "A City on Mars," I believe we should focus our efforts on this beautiful blue marble we live on. I am a fan of Space exploration, but I believe we can have a much more significant impact in the near term by finding solutions to the Earth's many environmental and societal challenges.

Francois Paul Lambert this is wonderful creativity. It’s true, some certain maximum attainable design will be most sufficient. This is the first I’ve seen that realistically displays potentials. It’s advanced, simplistic, and viable. What theoretical changes should we consider just with this perspective? Is this 95% of our 100, or 65?

I’m gonna happily be humming “shall I stay or shall I go” by the clash for the rest of the day, Thanks to you Francois!
