Today was the Hyvin Sanottu very unique discussion festival in Lahti. The event is organized by Yle, the Erätauko Foundation, and the City of Lahti, along with other partners. This year, there are over 70 discussions on different topics. This festival is not just a typical conference; it's about dialogue, reflection, and finding common ground, a rare space for collective thinking and exchange.
I was invited to participate in a discussion on the future of work culture in Finland. This is a complex theme, one that demands in-depth and critical exploration. When addressing concepts such as work and the future, particularly in the context of the role of international workers, it is essential to place them within a broader global, historical, and systemic context.
As a foundational starting point, reflecting on the very meaning of work itself could be a good idea. What does "work" signify in our current societal construct, and could it evolve or change to fit better the world's situation? Why do we engage in the specific types of work we do? Is our work contributing positively to the world, society, or our personal well-being? Or are we blindly accepting participation in a system that creates inequalities, injustices, and environmental harm for the sake of an "economic god" we worship? How can we collaborate as a community of diverse cultural backgrounds, to find deeper meaning in what we are doing, so that everyone can find a place where their unique talents can be put to the service of the common good, fostering a sense of belonging and meaning?
I hope this topic will be explored more deeply, but what an amazing festival this is!
Thank you so much Juha Valta for facilitating the discussion in the most relax and safe atmosphere where humour found its place too!
