As the curtains draw close on the final day of Gulfood - The World’s Largest, Most Trusted F&B Sourcing Event 2024, I find myself immersed in a whirlwind of insights, innovations, and industry transformations in the MENA Region. Let me share with you the highlights of this remarkable event and the notable shifts shaping the future of the food industry. A- Prioritizing Food Safety: Amidst evolving consumer demands, food safety remains paramount. Conversations revolved around strategies to mitigate risks and uphold the highest standards of safety throughout the supply chain. From stringent regulations to innovative technologies, the focus was on minimizing food safety issues and ensuring consumer trust. B- Consolidation of Large Companies: One unmistakable trend is the consolidation of the industry giants, as they expand their reach by acquiring smaller companies. This consolidation not only strengthens their market dominance but also fosters innovation and diversification within their portfolios. C- Lack of Start-ups Presence: Surprisingly, the show lacked the vibrant presence of start-ups that we often witness in Europe. The MENA region's entrepreneurial spirit seemed subdued, with a noticeable absence of start-ups and incubators. This gap underscores the need for greater support and investment in fostering a dynamic start-up ecosystem within the region. D- Expansion of Product Portfolios: Companies are expanding their product portfolios, catering to evolving consumer preferences. Notably, innovations extend beyond traditional offerings, with a surge in new protein-rich products and novel grain-based solutions. The introduction of barley flakes and other innovative grain processes exemplifies this diversification. E- Concerns Over Raw Material Supply: Against the backdrop of global events, concerns over raw material supply loom large. Ongoing conflicts in Ukraine and disruptions in the Suez Canal have heightened apprehensions among industry players. Companies are proactively exploring strategies to safeguard their supply chains and ensure uninterrupted access to essential raw materials. Gulfood - The World’s Largest, Most Trusted F&B Sourcing Event 2024 has been a testament to the resilience and adaptability of the food industry. While challenges persist, so too do opportunities for innovation and growth. As we navigate the evolving landscape, let us remain vigilant, collaborative, and committed to shaping a sustainable and prosperous future for the food industry. 👏Great news!👏Accor Group will roll out plant-based meals across all its 5,500 hotels, and targets making 50% of its menus plant-based by 2030. Accor Group are Europe's largest hospitality business, so it's great news that they're recognising the need to shift to more plant-based foods to cut their environmental footprint. People's food choices are shaped by the "food environments" around them, which are set by businesses and government policy - shaping the price, availability, quality and diversity of foods on offer. Currently, those food environments are massively scewed towards meat and dairy as the default option - with more choices, and made artificially cheap by subsidies. We need both governments and businesses to step up to make sure it's easier, cheaper, tastier and healthier to make the environmental choice. Increasing the choice of plant-based options on menus is an important part of that. 🌱🦀 Exciting News! We’ve recently completed #LCA's on our #PlantBased crab salad and are thrilled to confirm that it has almost 5 times lower CO2 emissions compared to traditional fish-based crab salad! 🌍📉 Following our success with our plant-based tuna chunks, *which have 85% lower emissions while matching the protein content of traditional tuna*, this is another win for Monkeys By The Sea. This should be music to the ears of caterers committed to becoming 60% plant-based by 2030.🌱 For a healthier future for people and the planet, it’s essential to eat more vegetable proteins. Which #Caterers want to champion this endeavor? 💪 Our innovative crab salad tastes great and swapping it for traditional crab will already make a big difference. Support local companies producing sustainable, plant-based products. We need the big players to walk their talk and support us to walk ours.
