🚨 Across the world, young people are questioning the viability of established parties as vehicles for channelling aspirations for change and the extent to which politics is still an effective tool for enacting popular will. In South Africa 🇿🇦, this is becoming even more evident. After 30 years in power, the African National Congress (#ANC) has lost its parliamentary majority after this year's elections, leading to a new governing coalition, the ‘Government of National Unity’. But despite these political shifts, old concerns remain: inequality, poverty, racism, violence, and corruption continue to affect everyday life. Young people, in particular, are feeling disillusioned with the promise of #democracy. At FES, we believe that #youth voices are critical for the future of democracy. ✊ In a recent discussion group organised by FES South Africa, young activists reflected on the future of democracy in the country and shared ideas on strengthening youth political engagement. The participants concluded that South Africa should: 💡 Have more youth representation on party lists 💡 Lower the voting age 💡 Simplify the registration process with frequent activations 💡 Roll out campaigns aimed at youth 💡 Provide clear, accessible manifestos in multiple languages 💡 Make parliament more accessible through fully-funded school excursions #YouthEngagement #Democracy #SouthAfrica #PoliticalChange #YouthVoices

#EmpoweringTheNextGeneration Yesterday marks 17 years of celebrating #InternationalDemocracyDay. Inline with international democracy day Citizen Voice and Actions (CVA-Rwanda) organized a virtual youth conference which emphasized on "Youth Engagement in Shaping Democratic Practices and Values in Africa". It was highlighted that youth engagement in shaping democratic practices and values have been facing challenges particularly on Africa continent. Issues such as unemployment rates, limited access to quality education and inadequate political representation have been hindering their ability to participate meaningful in democratic processes. #Thepanelist emphasized that democratic processes is essential not just as a right but as a necessity for #Africa's future. Collective actions among governments, civil society organizations and international partners are crucial to ensure meaningful and inclusive youth engagement in shaping democratic practices and values in Africa. There is a need of safe &inclusive and friendly spaces for youth, public resolutions, access to skills development, media, peace building networks and alliances to amplify youth's voices. Ultimately in her closing remark Elisenda Balleste Buxo from Global Democracy Coalition reminded us(participants) that we heard many times that youth are the future, but we are not the future, we are the present. #HappyInternationalDemocracyDay #YouthEngagement #AfricaYouth #DemocracyInAction

#GraphOfTheWeek: 30 Years After End of Apartheid – Inequality Persists. April 27 is Freedom Day in South Africa, commemorating the end of the Apartheid regime and the country’s first free and fair elections held on this date in 1994. This week’s graph shows the Equal distribution of resources index for South Africa from 1990 to today, which captures dimensions of both economic and social inequality, with the Liberal Democracy Index as a reference. The end of Apartheid meant a sudden and significant improvement in civil and political rights for millions of non-white South Africans. In the 30 years since then, however, South Africa has continuously been marked by high levels of inequality and the absence of further substantial improvements in many aspects of public life such as income, wealth, education and health. Social and economic inequality are not only an issue in and off themselves but can also translate into political inequality by limiting individuals’ fulfillment of formally granted civil and political rights – which is especially relevant with elections for South Africa’s National Assembly scheduled for May 29 of this year. Tinashe Ngirandi on Public Policies in Africa: Time for African Presidents to have Special Youth Advisors/Envoys - The Kenyan Gen Z Demonstration as a Case Study FULL ARTICLE ON FACEBOOK - this is just a paraphrasing. Africa's youth population is the world's largest, presenting immense potential. Yet, many African governments struggle to engage this demographic. The recent Gen Z protests in Kenya highlight the growing disconnect between young Africans and their political leadership. Countries like Rwanda have leveraged youth talent, but most nations fail to forge meaningful connections. Youth often feel alienated from government priorities and decision-making. Ministries for youth lack the resources and influence to align policies with youth needs. I believe African presidents should establish dedicated youth advisory roles in their offices. This would provide real-time insights into youth concerns and ensure their perspectives are integrated into policymaking. The Kenyan protests underscore the urgent need for this mechanism to bridge the elite-youth divide. Presidential youth advisors could harness Africa's youthful potential as agents of positive change. Countries like Rwanda, which have embraced this model, have seen enhanced youth engagement and more responsive governance. This should be a priority for African leaders.

The Ghana Peace Camp 2024 marks the fourth consecutive year of this initiative, following the successful launch of the first Peace Camp in 2021. This year’s camp will build on the foundation and success of previous years, combining participant-led sessions, facilitated dialogues, and skill-building interactions. Each session is designed to empower youth participants with practical tools and strategies for peacebuilding and community development. While we witness increasing divisions and tension across different lines including political, ethnic and religious, the Ghana Peace 2024 will bring together 25 young people of diverse backgrounds in a safe manner for collective learning, sharing, and co-creation of ideas. Additionally, in light of the heightened political climate surrounding the upcoming elections, the Ghana Peace Camp 2024 holds particular importance. The camp comes off only a few days before the election day and, therefore will be instrumental in reducing tensions and promoting peaceful participation in the electoral process. Every contribution helps build bridges and sows seeds of hope, peace, and forgiveness in the hearts and minds of many. #InvestInPeace #GhYouth4Peace https://lnkd.in/eETjZ-J6

Around the world, young people are increasingly disillusioned with political processes and justice institutions that do not engage them or their priorities. We’re honored to introduce the 2024 #WorldJusticeChallenge finalists in the youth engagement category. These dynamic organizations are working to turn dissatisfaction into action in: Brazil: Politize! Civic Education Institute offers engaging and accessible civic education to young people online and in schools across the country. Kenya: WECARE YOUTH ORGANIZATION cultivates an informed youth population capable of contributing to Kenya’s development, and their youth-led petitions and memoranda have actively shaped policy change. Nepal: Youth in Federal Discourse hosts workshops, model parliaments and mock law-making sessions for students to gain a deep understanding of democratic processes in their country. Romania, Moldova, Bosnia and Herzegovina: Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung fosters a supportive network of young legal professionals dedicated to rule of law. Their projects include providing free legal aid to vulnerable groups and educating teenagers on their constitutional rights. Ukraine: The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) facilitates dialogue between youth and local authorities to address concerns and support civic initiatives for sustainable development. Zimbabwe: 4-H Zimbabwe Foundation organizes “youth4peace” sports tournaments, seminars, and opportunities for dialogue to prevent political violence and empowers youth as agents of positive change. It's time for South Africans to reflect on the direction of our nation. 🌟 The recent State of the Nation Address by the ANC government has not left much to be desired. It's evident that they lack substance, innovative ideas, and the ambition to truly empower our people. This disregard for the youth is not only disrespectful but also detrimental to our country's future. This SONA serves as an insult to our collective intellect, with no major issues resolved or previous promises met. There are no clear Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) per ministry, just a plethora of empty promises and lies. The majority of young people born in 1994 have been failed by the ANC you just need take walks around township during week days, finding themselves uneducated, unemployed or worse. It's disheartening to witness our leaders prioritize empty rhetoric over tangible action. It's time for change. It's time for South Africans to exercise their voting rights and usher in leadership that prioritizes the needs of the people over political posturing. Let's demand accountability and a government that works tirelessly to uplift every citizen. 💪🏿🇿🇦 #VoteWisely #Accountability #Empowerment

🌍 Reflecting on Recent Events in Africa: Amplifying Youth Voices for Change 🌍 I am deeply troubled by recent events unfolding in Kenya, where peaceful youth protests have tragically ended in violence and loss of lives at the hands of authorities. This is not an isolated incident but part of a disturbing trend across Africa, where the voices of young people demanding justice and change are met with repression instead of dialogue. Amidst this turmoil, I find inspiration in the courage of a visually impaired member of Kenya's Parliament, who bravely spoke out against these injustices. Her voice, echoing the sentiments of countless others, highlights the urgent need for African governments to listen to their youth. We cannot overlook the irony of seeking independence from colonial rule only to witness our own leaders stifling dissent and perpetuating oppression. It's time for a new narrative where African leaders engage in genuine dialogue with their youth, recognizing their perspectives and aspirations. Suppressing voices only deepens divides and hinders progress. Let us stand in solidarity with the African youth, advocating for justice, transparency, and inclusivity in governance. Together, we can foster environments where every voice is heard, respected, and instrumental in shaping a brighter future for our continent. The time for change is now. #Africa #YouthEmpowerment #Justice #Leadership #Dialogue #ChangeIsNow #stopkillingtheyouthsofafrica

The FW de Klerk Foundation’s “South Africa First!” petition calls for the new government (which is still to be formed) to consist of political parties loyal to the Constitution. The petition comes in light of continuing coalition talks amongst political parties, while South Africa’s next President must be elected this Friday, 14 June 2024. “The petition also sets out what the Foundation views must be the key priorities for such a coalition government – all of which should be common ground to political parties who are committed to lasting freedom, peace, progress and prosperity for all South Africans,” says Christo Owen van der Rheede, Executive Director of the FW de Klerk Foundation. Key priorities include economic growth, infrastructure development, youth employment, food production, law and order, building a professional, accountable and responsive public service appointed on merit (and not on racial classification or political allegiance) and fostering unity amongst South Africans. “Unity amongst South Africans is crucial for social cohesion. The new government must build on our shared national identity - based on our human rights culture of non-racialism, non-sexism, human dignity, equality and freedom. It must foster empathy, respect and honesty amongst South Africans versus sowing division,” van der Rheede expands. “Allowing us to be united in our diversity, part of a nation we can take pride in.” Go to https://lnkd.in/d9zzwwdj to sign the petition. #fwdeklerkfoundation #southafricafirst #southafrica #coalition #governmentofconstitutionalunity #constitution #billofrights #unityindiversity
