🚨 New Research Alert: PCOS May Impact Brain Health in Later Life 🧠 Francesca Lyon, lead nutritionist at FUTURE WOMAN, is always on the lookout for new research. 👀 A recent study on women with polycystic ovarian syndrome (or PCOS) has caught her attention - and it's findings are pretty worrying. 🔬 The study suggests that women with PCOS may face faster cognitive decline as they age, showing lower performance in attention, memory, and verbal skills by the time they reach their 40s and 50s. But why? The research points to two potential culprits: insulin resistance and inflammation. However, Francesca believes there's a third key factor that warrants investigation - one that's often overlooked in PCOS research. Curious about what it could be? Who among us can truly assert that we have no regrets? This thought-provoking question is posed by Prof. Gavin Giovannoni, Prof. Helmut Butzkueven, and their fellow authors in the foreword of the Brain Health-Time Matters 2024 report. It encourages us to reflect on the “if only” or “what if” scenarios we can find ourselves in from time to time. Instead of lingering on these questions, let’s transform them into timely actions that can make a positive change. The Brain Health-Time Matters 2024 report is a remarkable publication that delves into the current management of MS, NMOSD, and MOGAD, as well as the broader impact these diseases have on individuals and society. With its actionable recommendations and future perspectives, this report is an essential read for those committed to making a difference for individuals, families, and society at large. In a recent feature on health.com, Kristin Baier MD, our Vice President of Clinical Development, delves into the compelling link between weight loss and enhanced brain health. As Dr. Baier highlights in the article, weight loss triggers a cascade of positive effects: metabolic syndrome reverses, inflammation decreases, and brain metabolism and mitochondrial function see a marked improvement. At Calibrate, we're attuned to the intersection of weight management and brain health. In fact, Emotional Health stands as a key pillar of our comprehensive approach to sustainable weight loss. Our 2024 Results Report underscores this commitment, with a notable 28% of members reporting improved emotional well-being—a testament to the real impact of our program. These findings echo broader clinical research, as mentioned in the article, emphasizing the pivotal role of lifestyle interventions in mitigating symptoms of depression and anxiety. We’re changing the way the world treats weight—while improving brain health in the process. Calibrate not only recognizes the connection between emotional health and metabolic health, but we've also integrated this concept into our evidence-based curriculum. Thank you so much to Lauryn Higgins and Health.com for talking with me about the role of GLP-1s (Zepbound, Wegovy, Saxenda, etc) and lifestyle intervention in reducing inflammation that can lead to symptoms of depression, anxiety and brain fog. https://lnkd.in/gGrdS26f

Heart Health and Holistic Living: Integrating Mind, Body, and Spirit: The profound influence of psychological states on cardiovascular health is underscored by a multitude of clinical studies. A landmark meta-analysis conducted by Rozanski et al. (1999) examined the relationship between depression and heart disease, revealing a significant association between depressive symptoms and adverse cardiac outcomes. Similarly, a longitudinal study by Kubzansky et al. (2001) found that individuals with a more optimistic outlook exhibited a reduced risk of coronary heart disease over a 15-year follow-up period. By acknowledging the intricate interplay of psychological, physiological, and spiritual factors, we can adopt a more holistic approach to heart health that transcends conventional medical paradigms. Moving forward, interdisciplinary collaboration and empirical research will be essential for elucidating the underlying mechanisms and optimizing interventions aimed at promoting cardiovascular resilience and well-being. A few weeks ago, the 11th edition of the Lausanne Conference brought together the world’s leading minds in Alzheimer’s research, brain health and prevention strategies. Ministers of Health, academic researchers, scientists and industry leaders engaged in three days of in-depth discussions spotlighting Lausanne as a global hub for solutions to Alzheimer’s disease. As part of the program, Carolee Lee (CEO & Founder, WHAM) and Dr. Andrea Pfeifer (Chair of the Global BHP BrainTrust) held a panel on igniting the future of women’s health, moderated by Nadine B. Hack (CEO, beCause Global Consulting). Women still bear the disproportionate burden of brain health disparities; therefore, they emphasized that the advancements in three key areas - closing the funding disparities, research on biological understandings and awareness - remain critically important for meaningful progress. #alzheimersawareness #Brainhealth

An Oxford study reveals that Ozempic (semaglutide) is not only safe for brain health but may also improve cognition and reduce nicotine dependence. Published in *The Lancet's eClinicalMedicine*, this research indicates no increased risk for dementia, depression, or anxiety compared to other diabetes medications. With over 100 million patient records analyzed, these results could reshape our approach to diabetes management and cognitive health. Lowering blood pressure isn't just about heart health – it's your brain's best friend too! In a comprehensive, multiyear clinical study known as SPRINT-MIND (Systolic Blood Pressure Intervention Trial: Memory and Cognition in Decreased Hypertension), researchers examined the impact of reducing blood pressure levels in over 8,000 older adults aged 50 years and above. The findings were striking: lowering systolic blood pressure to below 120 mmHg, in contrast to the conventional target of 140 mmHg, resulted in a significant decrease in the risk of Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI). #DementiaAwareness #HypertensionAwarenessMonth #GunitaParaSaDementia

A recent study explores how Subjective Cognitive Decline (SCD)—a potential early risk marker for Alzheimer’s disease—relates to memory function and brain health in older adults. 🧠 Key findings show: Higher SCD severity is linked to lower memory performance and reduced blood flow in the brain's memory center. Individuals with higher stroke risk may experience an even stronger connection between SCD and cognitive decline. Understanding these links could help identify early signs of Alzheimer’s and tailor interventions. More research is needed, but this is a step toward advancing cognitive health in aging!
