Canadian Mental Health Week is here and what better way to kick it off than by taking time for yourself? I started the week early by doing something I had not prioritized in a couple years - spending time on my own doing art. In the past few years, my home art studio has turned into my office and study room. So, it was a great feeling to take some time out to indulge in something I once loved doing. We often forget to prioritize our mental health, and this year’s MH week theme is #compassion… that includes self-compassion. What are some things YOU can do to take care of your mental health this week? #MentalHealthAwarenessWeek #SelfCare #MentalHealth #CompassionConnects

May is Mental Health Month - an important time to focus on staff and student mental wellbeing. The week of May 6th to the 12th is Mental Health Week in Canada. This year the Canadian Mental Health Association theme is “A call to be kind, compassion connects us all”. Everyone can learn and practice compassion, and doing so can make a big difference in our lives as well as others. Having compassion for others is important, but it is equally important to have compassion and love for yourself. Self-care is about being a champion for your own mental, emotional, spiritual, and physical health.

💼 MENTAL HEALTH AT WORK 💼 Mental health matters, and positive mental health is something that everyone deserves. This Mental Health Awareness Week is focussed around movement, and this is often something which is overlooked. With work, family, friends, social activities, responsibilities, and other commitments taking up large portions of time in our daily lives, making time for movement can be difficult. The chance to move and improve our mental health shouldn't be a luxury, and as a result, we are making exercise more available for our staff this Mental Health Awareness week! This is Canadian Mental Health Week. This year’s theme, 'A Call to be Kind', is centered the healing power of compassion – emphasizing that kindness is intrinsic to our humanity. We all have the capacity to be compassionate, and we know that doing so can make an enormous difference. Compassion is often confused with empathy; but while empathy is the sensing, feeling and understanding of another’s suffering, compassion goes beyond empathy, into the realm of taking action. This formula captures what compassion is: empathy + action = compassion. If you or someone you love is struggling, there is hope and help. This year’s Mental Health Week is centered on the healing power of compassion. Compassion is integral to discussing our mental health and mental health journeys. We can all take simple steps every day to cultivate compassion - Practice self-compassion – turn compassion inward and offer yourself the same kindness you would a loved one. Listen non-judgementally to others and take genuine interest and curiosity in their experiences - including those who are different from you in terms of gender, age, racial and ethnic background, spiritual and religious beliefs and more. Recognize that a true human experience is not perfect, but one where we all make mistakes and have the capacity to learn and grow. #mentalhealthweek #CompassionConnects

The Canadian Mental Health Association’s annual Mental Health Week looks to shift attitudes and perceptions about mental health. The 2024 theme is #CompassionConnects which highlights the healing power of compassion. With worrying levels of stress, anxiety, and loneliness heightened by social inequality and an affordability crisis, it is easy to overlook that kindness is an integral part of our humanity. This #MentalHealthWeek, let's embrace the power of compassion! As the CMHA highlights, kindness and understanding can be a powerful force for healing. Compassion isn't just about being kind to others, it's about extending that same kindness to ourselves.
