Following on from the success of last year’s International Biogas Congress & Expo, which attracted over 350 attendees from across the bio spectrum, this year’s edition, organised by Bionergy Insight magazine, promises to deliver yet another world-leading programme of presentations, knowledge-sharing and networking opportunities. On 18-19 June, Hotel Le Plaza in Brussels will host this year’s International Biogas Congress & Expo will see leading producers, suppliers, regulators and other engaged organisations convene over a two-day period.  Confirmed speakers include senior representatives from ENGIE, TotalEnergies and the European Biogas Association, with many more of the industry’s leading lights listed on the event agenda. This year’s conference will be co-located with the new-for-2024 SAF Summit and the renowned Biofuels International Conference & Expo, now in its 15th year, making this series of bio events our largest gathering yet of bio-related companies – giving participants unrivalled coverage. Decarbonisation, net-zero and energy security are set to be crucial topics, with renewable gas taking centre stage in helping companies and governments meet their goals. 🚀 I was thrilled to present our latest work at the 32nd European Biomass Conference & Exhibition (EUBCE24) in Marseille last week (24-27 June)! 🇫🇷 🔬 Our research, "High Efficiency and Zero Emissions Biogas-to-Power: Solid Oxide Fuel Cells and Advanced Biogas Cleaning", explores innovative solutions for biogas utilization in high-efficiency fuel cells. Key Highlights: 🌿 SOFCs: Solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) offer >55% energy conversion efficiency and low emissions, making them ideal for distributed combined heat and power (CHP) systems. 🧪 Biogas Cleaning: Effective purification is crucial for powering SOFCs. Our study evaluates the techno-economic impact of biogas cleaning systems. 📉 Techno-Economic Analysis: For a 3-kW plant, cleaning costs significantly impact the levelized cost of electricity (LCOE), ranging from 27-41%. For a 100-kW plant, SOFC costs dominate, but the lead-and-lag configuration helps reduce operational costs. ✅ Cost-Effectiveness: Competitive LCOE: <0.12 €/kWh for 3-kW systems and <0.07 €/kWh for 100-kW plants, demonstrating the viability of biogas-powered SOFCs for renewable energy production.  First World Biogas Congress in Latin America – A Landmark Event for the Region! 🌍 The World Biogas Association proudly organized the first-ever World Biogas Congress in Latin America during the first week of November, held in Foz do Iguaçu, Brazil. This milestone event, taking place alongside G20 meetings and the Clean Energy Ministerial, marks a significant step toward realizing the region’s biogas potential. ·      Unlocking Latin America’s Biogas Potential: The Congress focused on how Latin America, with Brazil leading the way, can harness its vast bioenergy resources. We explored strategies for integrating biogas with green biofuels and hydrogen production, alongside showcasing innovative technologies and applications that could reshape the energy landscape across the continent. ·      Shaping Policy, Driving Innovation & Revenue Growth: The event featured key discussions on policy and regulatory frameworks that will define the future of biogas in the region. Participants also learned about new revenue streams from biogas co-products like digestate and bioCO₂, addressing feedstock challenges, and exploring investment opportunities for biogas projects. ·       Collaboration Across Latin America: The Congress brought together government officials, industry leaders, and stakeholders from across Latin America, fostering partnerships to drive the biogas sector forward. 🤝 We're thrilled to welcome SC Energy-Serv SRL as a new member of the World Bioenergy Association! 🌱 With over 26 years of experience in energy efficiency and renewables, SC Energy-Serv SRL excels in designing, building, and operating biomass energy systems, particularly High Efficiency Cogeneration on biomass. 🇷🇴 Currently, they are collaborating with other companies to implement a bio-food and biorefinery project in Romania. This initiative uses Romanian hybrids of Sweet Sorghum to produce wheat and sugar, and converts waste into ethanol, advanced fuels, RNG, biogenic CO2 for greenhouses, and green energy (power & heat). The cultivation of Sweet Sorghum is crucial for combating the desertification of agricultural land and adapting to climate change.
