Hurricane in East Coast USA On October 3, a ‘category 3’ hurricane made landfall between Cape Lookout and Ocracoke Island in North Carolina. North Carolina will bear the brunt, with wind gusts up to 240 km/h and storm tide heights of 2.5 to 4.0 meters. Damage will exceed $2 billion, with 5,000 homes damaged and 1.5 million people left without electricity. Total damage in North Carolina will reach about $4 billion, including $2 billion to homes and businesses, $1 billion to public property, and $500 million each to forestry and agriculture. In South Carolina, the hurricane will produce high winds and moderate rainfall, downing trees and power lines, and leaving over 50,000 people without electricity. Damage will reach about $500 million. The hurricane will also cause flooding in Virginia, West Virginia, Maryland, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Washington, D.C.
Chris Smith, Executive Director of The Utopian Seed Project, published a compelling and important article about the impact of Hurricane Helene on farmers and farmland in Western North Carolina. "Suddenly, there’s deep climate trauma here, in a place where we mistakenly thought hurricanes happened to Floridians and coastal communities, not us. Helene stole our sense of security: we now side-eye trees, which crushed homes, power lines, cars, and people. And the rain, the farmer’s frequent wish, turned our rivers maniacal. It’s not just a question of what Helene, now the nation’s deadliest hurricane since Katrina, took. It’s also a question of what it left behind: tons of soil, sediment, and toxic sludge in places where it shouldn’t be – including covering our region’s farms," writes Smith. Farmers across the region are facing the monumental task of rebuilding their livelihoods and the health of the soil after what is deemed to be a 30,000-year weather event. FLORIDA AG RESEARCH: HURRICANE MILTON UPDATE Florida Ag Research is reaching out to our clients, vendors and friends about our status coming through hurricanes Helene and Milton. While we were not unscathed, we are in good shape for our fall research program. Due to our higher land elevation compared to surrounding areas, Florida Ag remained relatively dry through Helene and was largely unaffected, except for some effects of wind. In preparation for Hurricane Milton, we postponed planting for two weeks ahead and secured plant materials in protected structures. This includes nearly all vegetable trials and our entire strawberry program, minimizing disruption to our timeline. However, many of our neighbors experienced more severe impacts, and we are supporting their recovery efforts while continuing to plant our fall research program as scheduled. For clients with trials in Florida, our team will reach out individually this week to provide a status update. Your research remains secure, and we appreciate your patience as we work through the unprecedented current conditions. - Update on Hurricane Helene Impact - Our thoughts are with all those affected by Hurricane Helene, especially our ArborGen team and their families. We are doing all we can to support our people and would like to thank them for their incredible efforts, both prior to the storm and in the clean-up and salvage. While the teams are still assessing the impact of the storm, we can advise that the crop for FY25 is mostly unaffected. There was minimal crop damage at ArborGen’s Bellville Nursery in Georgia, demonstrating the value of ArborGen’s investment in container planting. Some damage to trees has been sustained at two of our orchards which will result in a lower seed harvest in FY25 and following years. These are smaller orchards representing around 30% of our FY25 coastal MCP® expected seed harvest. It is currently at the start of the harvest season, after which we will have a clearer idea of the impact on its seed inventory. We have sufficient inventory to meet projected customer demand. We have also been reaching out to customers, with many forests devastated by flooding, mud and landslides and strong winds.
