Hi, My name is Tranard Harvin and I am the founding Executive Director of the Low Country Youth Enhancement Program (LCYEP). It was August 9, 2016 and I was experiencing the worst case of nerves since delivering my undergraduate capstone at Claflin University’s 2016 Honors Week. All of the success stories were starting to seem too good to be true. My goal to develop a thriving nonprofit to combat the outdated youth experience of Williamsburg County was closer than ever before. Between completing grant applications and forming relationships with community leaders, the dedication and fulfillment of a greater community presence for the Low Country Youth Enhancement Program (LCYEP) had become a timeless effort. The idea for the organization came after I attended the 2011 National Youth Leadership Conference. Through interactive sessions on policy and engagement, I was inspired to return with plans of changing the way students organized and participated in community efforts. This process has been rigid but resulted in organizational efficiency. The LCYEP addresses the inadequate number of academic enrichment programs offered to minority students in Williamsburg County Public School System. This includes the limited exposure to social platforms used for youth empowerment and the lack of progressive pursuits from other business and government leaders. While Williamsburg County’s historic district is a fine collection of nineteenth-century vernacular commercial architecture, the social service offering for families is only (STATISTICAL DATA). Recently, the Educational Talent Search (ETS), a program that identifies and assists individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds, was discontinued due to a lack of funding. ETS served public middle and high school students in Williamsburg County. The organization is currently composed of four core programs. 1.) The FUND and Leadership Development Program supports academically gifted students; preparing and fully sponsoring their participation in national youth conferences related to their anticipated profession. These students will be required to provide proof of their academic and social engagement to qualify for this program. This program will benefit its participants by offered training in peace resolution, education reform and social inclusion. 2.) Project Dance, Act, Sing (DAS) is an 8-week summer program that allows young performers to enhance their talent in the areas of dance, act and vocal performance. This program introduces the cultural diversity of the arts to emerging artists throughout the community. 3.) Project Safe Streets (PSS) raises the awareness of mental health among teenage girls and boys. 4.) Our instructional community garden teaches our community the importance of a greener world through agricultural and personal growth.

New NACC Member Research by Genevieve Shaker, Ph.D. from, Indiana University Lilly Family School of Philanthropy; Meng-Han Ho, Ph.D. from National Central University; and Chen Ji, Ph.D. from LSU Shreveport🖊️ The COVID-19 #pandemic upended college classrooms, challenging instructors to deliver classes differently while still seeking to achieve pre-planned goals. Service-learning instructors faced a quandary: discontinuing activities could compromise course integrity, but requiring service was impossible, impractical, or inappropriate. Creative solutions were needed. This study explored the learning outcomes from a replacement activity, the #philanthropic informational interview, in a #philanthropy general education class and asked whether it could generate outcomes similar to #service-learning. Data were drawn from student reflections (n = 145) from nine online course sections between spring 2020 and summer 2021. Thematic analysis identified eight learning outcomes: engaging with social issues, #nonprofit solutions to social issues, insights into nonprofits’ inner workings, philanthropy as everyone’s responsibility, enhanced empathetic understanding, value-driven career inspiration, developing interview skills, and building career capacities. These outcomes align with research about service-learning and suggest that the philanthropic informational interview can be a meaningful alternative to service-learning in some situations. As the Summer Term approaches non-academic leaders from across the school work together to create memorable events for departing students and new families. These events range from grand prize-giving ceremonies to heartfelt farewells for departing students and warm welcomes for incoming families. The agenda is diverse and extensive, reflecting the rich tapestry of experiences offered by these institutions. Far more than mere ceremonies, these events serve as pivotal moments for the school community. They are not only opportunities to celebrate achievements but also powerful tools for retention and attraction. For existing families, they reinforce the bond with the school, fostering a sense of belonging and loyalty. Meanwhile, for new families, they offer a glimpse into the school's ethos, culture, and community spirit, laying the groundwork for lasting connections. Beyond the immediate benefits, these occasions also sow the seeds for future alumni engagement. By creating memorable experiences and forging strong relationships, schools lay the foundation for lifelong connections with their former pupils. In essence, these end-of-term events are more than just calendar entries; they are vibrant expressions of the school's identity and values. They encapsulate the spirit of learning, growth, and community that defines the ethos of independent education in the UK. Talk to us about how we can help your school reach the very best talent who can create impact and growth in your school, email: Talk@schoolsleadership.com or message Kirsty Hassan. #summerterm #events #schoolsmarketing #schoolsleadership

🌟EXCITING NEWS FROM NCMPS!🌟 The National Center for Montessori in the Public Sector is launching school and individual memberships. Read on for why we think you should become a sustaining member. Since our founding in 2012, we have worked passionately to bring together and advance the public Montessori movement in the U.S. We've built a rich community network and studied public Montessori to build the tools and services the field told us were needed. Now, we're inviting schools and individuals to join us in membership. Membership offers benefits, of course. School members get program and leadership support, vendor discounts, and more. Individuals get professional learning discounts and access to the tools. But we think the biggest benefit is being part of something larger than just one school or organization. Public Montessori is spread all over the country—in 43 states plus Washington D.C. and Puerto Rico. It's a movement comprising nearly 600 schools, 6,000 teachers, and 200,000 children and their families. If your mission is aligned with ours—transforming lives by cultivating equitable, accessible, sustainable, and humanizing public education through Montessori—then we invite you to show your support and realize the benefits by becoming a member. You can learn more and join on our website. Link in the comments below 👇 👇👇 We look forward to working together with you to advance the movement. #publicmontessori #montessori #membership #access #equity #equality #community

China Gilreath reports: Women of Color Education Collaborative (WOCEC), a new nonprofit organization, has sprung up to address the lack of #diversity among K-12 #superintendents in the nation. Led by Stephanie Wood-Garnett, Ed.D., WOCEC provides a cohort model through which current and aspiring educational leaders can interact and empower each other as leaders, build relationships, and elevate their skills through the array of professional development services that WOCEC provides. "I am thrilled to lead an organization that champions and supports women leaders,” said Wood-Garnett, who formerly served as an associate vice president at the Educational Testing Service (ETS) and president of the Institute for Student Achievement. “I understand the unique challenges diverse women leaders face in organizations. When women come together and develop trust and community, we create a foundation for collaboration, support, and lasting positive change in our communities.” Dr. Jamal Watson, executive editor at Diverse: Issues In Higher Education, has been tapped to chair WOCEC’s board of directors. He said that the work of WOCEC is critically important in helping to expand the talent pool within K-12 and higher education. “WOCEC is taking the lead to formulate solutions and actionable outcomes that will harness resources and contacts to provide access and equity to all," said Watson, who is also a professor at Trinity Washington University. "Under President Wood-Garnett's leadership, I am excited to see how this organization and network will continue to expand in the upcoming years." Registration is now open for the WOCEC national conference. This year’s event, themed “Fostering Community, Support, and Empowerment,” will take place Oct. 10 -12, 2024, in Washington, D.C. #AuthenticRepresentation #DiversityInclusion #SchoolDistricts #SchoolSuperintendents #WomenLeaders #BlackWomenLeaders #EducationalLeadership #DiversityInEducation

Some hard truths and compelling insights from my friend and colleague Ian Symmonds. He reminds us that the mission of non-profits—schools specifically— is transformation, not profit. Impact, not growth for the sake of growth. An excellent read that should generate difficult and overdue conversations in schools. #independentschools #leadership #strategicplanning #payattention
