The IEC 60079 Explosive Atmospheres is a vital standard for environments where I’ve often encountered potentially explosive gases, vapors, or dust, especially in industries like oil and gas, chemicals, and heavy industry. The standard offers a structured approach to safety in these high-risk zones, from classifying hazardous areas based on the likelihood of explosive atmospheres (e.g., Zone 0 for continuous risks, Zone 1 for likely but intermittent risks, and Zone 2 for rare risks) to specifying protection methods that manufacturers and engineers use to prevent ignition. These include: - Intrinsic Safety (Ex i), which limits energy levels so no spark can ignite the atmosphere, - Flameproof Enclosures (Ex d), designed to contain explosions within the equipment, and - Pressurization (Ex p), which keeps hazardous gases out by maintaining positive pressure. For me, following IEC 60079 means that the equipment I work with is not only rigorously tested and certified but also marked with protection codes (like Ex d or Ex i) that guide its safe use in specific hazardous zones. The standard also provides installation and maintenance guidelines, which I consider essential to long-term safety. By implementing IEC 60079 in my projects, I help ensure compliance, prevent accidents, and protect both personnel and assets in demanding industrial environments. #SIS #SIL #IEC #Safety #Risk #Haazardous #Instrumentation #Process

🚨Key Updates in IEC 60079-14:2024! The new edition of IEC 60079-14:2024 is here, bringing essential changes for those involved in the design, selection, installation, and inspection of electrical systems in explosive atmospheres. Key updates include: ✅Title Update: The title has been revised to "Electrical installation design, selection and installation of equipment, including initial inspection." This change ensures that all critical areas, particularly initial inspection, are clearly highlighted in the title. ✅Terminology: The term "Installation of equipment" now replaces "Erection" in the title, reflecting more commonly used wording. ✅Alignment with IEC 60079-11: Requirements for simple apparatus have been updated to align with IEC 60079-11. ✅Flowchart Revisions: The flowchart has been revised to consider equipment groups, cable lengths, and enclosures with a volume ≤ 2,000 cm³. ✅Annex C: The previous informative Annex C has been improved to provide more detailed guidance on testing cables and aligning them with the selection requirements. ✅Annex O: The normative tables in the "Initial Inspection" section have been moved to the informative Annex O, allowing for the customization of checklists for specific installations. These changes align with the broader updates in IEC 60079-17:2024, particularly the shift to roles like "Technical Person with Executive Function (TPEF)" and "Skilled Persons" in inspection and maintenance. As always, ensure your practices align with the latest standards to maintain safety and compliance across regions. These updates are essential for all professionals involved with electrical installations in explosive atmospheres. Make sure you’re up to date with the latest standards! Field Inspection Insight: What Would You Do? During an inspection of our new EX LSC panel in the field, I noticed something concerning — the PVC shroud was broken and secured with a cable tie. This clearly raises some questions about safety and compliance. In a situation like this, what would be your next step? Would you: 1. Report it immediately and halt any operations involving the panel? 2. Replace the shroud ? 3. Investigate how this was missed during installation? I’m interested to hear your thoughts and approaches on how to handle such issues to ensure equipment integrity and safety in the field.
