EU ATEX Notified Bodies Gather in Brussels Today and tomorrow, Brussels will play host to a pivotal gathering of key stakeholders in the world of industrial safety and innovation. The EU ATEX Notified Bodies Meeting, taking place on September 16-17, brings together technical experts and regulatory authorities to discuss critical issues surrounding the certification of equipment intended for use in potentially explosive atmospheres in the European Union. This annual meeting is not only a platform for collaboration but also a key driver in ensuring that conformity assessments to safety standards evolve alongside the rapid technological changes shaping the modern industrial landscape. Element’s Netherlands based ATEX notified body (No. 2812) is being represented at this important meeting. The ATEX Directive (2014/34/EU) governs the equipment and protective systems designed for use in explosive atmospheres across Europe. This directive is crucial in ensuring that equipment used in hazardous areas—ranging from oil and gas refineries to chemical plants—meets stringent safety standards. The term “ATEX” focuses on environments where explosive gases, vapors, or dust could present serious safety risks. One of the meeting’s central aims is to strengthen collaboration across the EU, ensuring that all member states uphold a consistent level of safety and certification rigor. With over 60 Notified Bodies across Europe, harmonizing their activities is crucial to maintaining trust and ensuring that the European internal market operates smoothly. This also benefits manufacturers, who will enjoy a more streamlined path to certification and market access. September is an important month for conformity assessment of hazardous area equipment. Equipment used in hazardous locations that are subject to the potential presence of explosive gas must be designed and certified as safe for use in the intended area for the intended purpose. EEC directives require that equipment and protective systems intended for use in potentially explosive atmospheres must carry ATEX certification. If a piece of equipment has official ATEX certification, it has been fully tested and approved to be safe to use in hazardous/explosive atmospheres.
