30 days of Wellbeing w Sharman @Work Day 10: Self Advocacy This may very well be the most important well-being at work practice: Advocate for yourself. Self-advocacy is the ability to speak up for yourself and your needs, and to make decisions that affect your life. It involves understanding your strengths and weaknesses, identifying your goals, and knowing your rights and responsibilities. It also means being able to communicate these things to others, and to ask for what you want and need. This week I coached my daughter in asking for a raise at work: researching competitive pay, incorporating customer feedback, positioning the value she brings to the company, and asking for what she wants. As a parent and a woman, teaching and promoting self advocacy is one of the most important skills I can pass on to others. #selfadvocacy #coaching #wellbeingatwork #career

What is self-advocacy? Why is it so important? What does the process look like in Global Development? ⬇ Thank you to The Advocacy Team for hosting a stimulating and thought-provoking discussion on the importance of self-advocacy in the workplace. I could place myself in some situations when listening to the individual stories by Reem Berrada, Nasim Salad, Leila Bousbaa, and Sabrina de Souza. The sharing of their tips and process into self-advocacy was powerful and reassuring. Here is some of what I learnt: Self-advocacy is simply speaking up for yourself and your interests. This is especially important for the workplace. Imposter syndrome is real. You must remind yourself that you are experienced and brave and that what you say is as important as everyone else in the room. You are there for a reason! To help with this, be who you are; it can sometimes cause more harm if you try to fit in. Stand up for yourself. It is difficult to navigate situations where unconscious bias prevails; however, pick up on the negative connotation. Building a support network can help you realise that self-care and self-advocacy can also be collective care and advocacy. It was wonderful to see the discussions taking place at the end about other people's experiences and how they overcame them. It is also encouraging to know that because of the discussion about experiences such as theirs, more can grow comfortably in the workplace.
