Next Month at the UN Headquarters in New York: Summit of the Future (September 22-23) + Summit of the Future Action Days (September 20-21). Registration for the Action Days is now open. The three themes of the Action Days (digital and technology, peace and security, and sustainable development and financing) and the focus on youth resonate strongly with the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) #ICPD30 priorities. This presents a great opportunity for diverse stakeholders to come together, advocate for shared interests, and collaborate towards common goals. "Bringing together representatives from Member States, civil society, private sector, academia, local and regional authorities, youth, and many more, the Action Days will provide an opportunity for broad engagement and inclusion. These stakeholders have all played a key role in shaping the Pact for the Future and will be critical to its implementation. The Action Days will kick off with a dedicated, youth-led afternoon followed by a Saturday programme which will focus on three priority themes – digital and technology, peace and security, and sustainable development and financing. In addition to the three themes, there will also be a dedicated focus throughout the day on future generations. Expected participants include Heads of State, Ministers, senior UN officials and representatives from the private sector, civil society and other actors.” More information: https://lnkd.in/efdMr3ME

New Year's Message from the UCLG President! Local Leadership for a Global Future: Welcoming 2025 with Hope and Determination The World Organization of UCLG and its Presidency wish you all a happy and prosperous New Year 2025. As we bid farewell to a complex 2024, the municipalist movement remains devoted to its mission: our shared values around solidarity, justice, and peace underpin our resolve to remain together and committed to advancing the common global agendas. Care, equity, and resilience remain our key instruments for fulfilling the commitments outlined in the Pact for the Future of Humanity. Towards 2025, we reaffirm our belief in the transformative power of local democracy to build equitable and participatory societies. Guided by our core values—decentralization, subsidiarity, and self-governance—we will continue to champion city diplomacy as a vital tool for fostering global peace. In this spirit, the organization is prepared to actively contribute to the critical global discussions of 2025, including the World Summit on Social Development and the Fourth Financing for Development Conference but also to creating our own multilateral space through the Local Social Covenant and putting bottom-up perspectives from the World Forum of Intermediary Cities, the World Forum on Local Economic Development, the Forum on Cities and Territories of Peace, the Conference of the International Observatory on Participatory Democracy, and the UCLG Culture Summit. These events are key to unlocking the potential of local and regional governments and creating the conditions for meaningful action. We will continue to advocate for a systemic approach that values and underscores the importance and the diversity of cities and territories—from major metropolises to intermediary cities, and encompassing rural areas—because these are the spaces where sustainable development takes root and flourishes. Our shared goals will serve as a beacon of hope, guiding us toward a future that benefits all of humanity. Let us step into this new year with renewed determination and solidarity, together within our movement and alongside global organizations. Let us embrace the transformative power of inclusion, the vitality of youth, and the strength of our collective resolve. Together, we are ready to transform the world and make 2025 a year of hope, action, and shared success.

We are celebrating the inspiring conference ‘Innovations for Democracy Support’ that took place at the European Parliament in Brussels last week, organised jointly by the Democracy Support and Election Coordination Group of the European Parliament (DEG) and the OECD - OCDE. Jonelle Naudé was invited to take part in the panel discussion on Citizens Assemblies as Tools for Democracy Support, facilitated by Elene Panchulidze. She was joined by co-panelists Armelle Douaud, Director, Directorate for Democracy Support, DG EXPO, European Parliament; Aleksandar Klarić Klarić, Secretary General, Parliament of Montenegro; and Richard Youngs, Senior Fellow, Carnegie Europe. They gave powerful accounts of the impact and successes of Citizens Assemblies, important lessons learned, and democratic support policies that could drive it forward – true leaders and role-models, actively innovating in Democracy Support. Jonelle shared top tips from the tried and tested nniMethodology that allow for safe and transformative expression of emotion in a dialogue, and deconstructing the inherent power-imbalance and social hierarchy by: Positioning and dialoguing with systemic voices, externalizing and depersonalizing emotion and perspectives, and bringing the marginalized systemic voices into central position throughout the dialogue. Understanding that emotion and even collective trauma will show up in most public processes is key. This is not only relevant for “post-conflict” countries and nation states in trauma – it is a real context for every community today. We need to acknowledge our context of global and local acceleration in crisis (climate, food, migration, economic, political, social) and growing inequality. Subsequent polarization and societal cleavages have become mainstream phenomena, not outliers. We need to meet citizens where they are (including their anxiety, frustration, anger, hopelessness, and distrust) and create access to public dialogue and processes that facilitate transformation, healing, empathy and greater understanding of other - co-creating more resilient societies, greater social cohesion, and active citizenship. As such it is an ethical imperative to facilitate public dialogue (and therefore Citizens Assemblies) that also are designed to allow and process collective emotions, create greater understanding of other, and balance inherent power discrepancy. Let’s help societies heal, create stronger social cohesion and systemic resilience, and unlock collective intelligence. A special appreciation to visionary Marta Udina head of the DEG, Francesco Ronchi and Adriana Buchiu for believing in the nniMethodology and creating more access to collective healing and reconciliation, whilst propelling deliberative democracy forward through this conference! In September, the IYTT launched a collaboration with the Brussels-based think tank Friends of Europe, through Youth Fellows Lisa Lundgren and Silvia Papic. They have spent their autumn and winter facilitating focus group discussions with 100 Swedish citizens on the four themes of economy, climate, democracy, and security. The results from the focus group discussions, as well as from a survey, are the keystones in the newly launched report 2024 voices – Citizens Speak Up! https://lnkd.in/eVxW92Xc Collaborating with Friends of Europe was an invaluable experience for us, as we not only got to, recruit to, and facilitate focus groups but also interpret overarching opinions and themes, and produce a Swedish report on the findings. At one point in the fall, we went to Brussels and got to visit our office and meet our colleagues in real life, which was a true highlight. The findings from the Swedish focus groups were expected in some ways, since we both belong to the age group that was studied. However, some opinions stood out and what was most surprising to us was the strive and ambition that many people showed. The way in which individual citizens choose to bike to work in the rain instead of driving their car, how they engage in civil society organizations or political parties, how they have limited their fast fashion shopping or try to eat more plant-based. These are choices that are not always seen by others, things that are done in one’s own home and one’s private life, that actively contribute to a better society for all. In times of economic recession, armed conflicts on several places in the world, and antidemocratic forces gaining power, it is easy to become cynical and pessimistic. After these focus group discussions, we have even more faith than before, in youth. We were astonished by all the solutions that young people presented on societal issues. We are the generation that will make things right. We thank Friends of Europe for this great collaboration and look forward to more projects in the future! #youth #empowerment #democracy Debating Europe

This month's election showed that the economy remains a top priority for Americans. People are eager to see a rise in job opportunities, higher wages that reflect the cost of living, and access to a more secure financial future. That said, we know the economy does not work equitably for all people. Systemic racism and toxic individualism permeate the economic systems in which we operate, leading to exclusion for many individuals and families. How can we get to a place of economic inclusion where all families and communities can thrive? On October 16-18th, IHDSC hosted 𝘖𝘶𝘳 𝘚𝘵𝘰𝘳𝘪𝘦𝘴, 𝘖𝘶𝘳 𝘚𝘰𝘭𝘶𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘴: 𝘈 𝘚𝘶𝘮𝘮𝘪𝘵 𝘰𝘯 𝘛𝘳𝘢𝘯𝘴𝘧𝘰𝘳𝘮𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘷𝘦 𝘚𝘰𝘭𝘶𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘴 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘌𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘰𝘮𝘪𝘤 𝘌𝘲𝘶𝘪𝘵𝘺 in New York City. The summit brought together peers, parents, community leaders, practitioners, advocates, and researchers from across the country who are committed to improving the lives of children and families in the United States. Participants engaged in direct dialogue and collective reflection about their experiences, ideas, and work in the areas of economic justice, inclusion, and child and family well-being.
