The decarbonisation debate: exploring climate action for equitable cities This online event organized by the International Institute for Environment and Development (IIED) on 24 June will explore opportunities for climate change mitigation policies and practices to respond to poverty and support social justice in cities and the agendas of urban social movements.Drawing on examples shared in the new issue of the Environment and Urbanization journal, we will debate the role of decarbonisation in the efforts to achieve urban social justice and climate-resilient development. What makes low-income and informal communities legitimate sites for decarbonisation? How can low-carbon infrastructural initiatives align with adaptation priorities? And how would decarbonisation efforts accelerate social justice in low- and middle-income cities? Register: https://lnkd.in/ecedWbhv #ClimateAction4Cities

🌍 The World Cities Report 2024 presents critical insights into how cities are at the forefront of addressing the challenge of climate change. 💡 Here are some of the key findings: 🔸 Just urban transition: Climate actions policies must prioritize equity and not to disproportionately affect vulnerable communities. 🔸 Close the urban finance gap: Cities must collaborate with regional, national, and private stakeholders to address funding shortfalls in urban climate finance. 🔸 Ethical considerations: There’s a need for transparent and participatory decision-making processes. 🔸 Cautious digitalization: While smart city initiatives offer potential, they can reinforce inequalities if not managed carefully. 🔸 Community engagement: Stablish people-centered solutions that ensure no one is left behind in the transition to climate-resilient cities. 👉 Read the full report here: https://loom.ly/W7lJeqE #WorldCitiesReport2024

In a recent study, our researchers stress the necessity of integrating #climate resilience into value-chain interventions. This can be achieved through designing tailored strategies that consider the unique ecological and socioeconomic contexts of arid and semi-arid regions. Effective adaptation requires active collaboration among government agencies, non-governmental organizations, private sector entities, and local communities. Read more: https://buff.ly/3Y64HwM

Words cannot express my gratitude to all the presenters and participating stakeholders who attended the 'Habitable Futures: Adapting Policy in a Changing Climate' event. The two days were filled with deep discussions and invaluable learning at the climate change adaptation interface. We explored the interconnections and policy implications surrounding topics such as climate-induced migration, climate change adaptation, the role of the circular economy, challenges around land markets for vulnerable communities, and adaptation planning in human settlement design. I want to extend a special thank you to my The Hugo Observatory: Environment, Migration, Politics #habitableproject and the CSIR Smart Places team for their incredible support and contributions to the success of the event. The event saw strong representation from researchers, policymakers, and practitioners across national and local government, the private sector, and research organizations. Thank you to everyone who contributed to this enriching experience! #HabitableProject #CSIR #ClimateChangeAdaptation #CircularEconomy #Migration #PolicyImplications #Sustainability #SmartPlaces #Collaboration #AdaptationPlanning #Greenbook

👉 Are growth and sustainability compatible? Or conflictual? This is THE topic of our times. And BSR's finger is on the pulse. 👥 Though we're not the only ones. Financial Times weighed in on it this week with, "ESG is Dead, Long Live ESG." GlobeScan and ERM held a joint webinar yesterday titled, "Breakthroughs and Backlash: The Dual Forces Shaping Sustainability Leadership" (links below). 💡 Heck -- my colleagues Jacob Park and Margot Brent just published a SEMINAL REPORT on the very topic, titled, "Between Two Worlds: Sustainable Business in the Turbulent Transition". Towards which world are we headed? A sustainable one? Or planetary overshoot? (Read the report to find out. It's absolutely mind-blowing. 🤯 ) ❓ The throughline here? We are all talking about the conflict between growth and sustainability, the 'forever tension' felt between capitalism and planetary boundaries. And well, we're all trying to figure out what to do about it. ⭐ Read more below in this insightful Q&A between Chhavi Ghuliani and Jo Swinson. ❗ And join us next week in NYC during United Nations Climate Week - 9/24 at 9am EST - for what stands to be a decisive conversation between Aron Cramer, CEO of BSR, and Dr Sally Uren, CEO of Forum for the Future. I can't wait to tune in! #beyondgrowth #limitstogrowth #sustainability Giulio Berruti Julie Dugard Ameer Hamza Azim Links: UNGA Climate Week Session: https://lnkd.in/e7dq_UBK BSR Report: https://lnkd.in/eE3zhsai FT: https://lnkd.in/ezTmBbQw GlobeScan: https://lnkd.in/e49-jk34
How does our economy need to transform for humanity to thrive in the long term? What concrete actions can businesses take to explore alternative models to growth? Ahead of Climate Week NYC, Jo Swinson, Director at Partners for a New Economy (P4NE), chats with Chhavi Ghuliani, BSR Managing Director, Partnership Development, about the tension between traditional growth models and sustainability goals, and how businesses can work together to explore new ways of measuring economic success.
