NIGERIAN AGRITECH PIONEER Kitovu SECURES SPOT IN PRESTIGIOUS QUALCOMM MAKE IN AFRICA PROGRAM. Kitovu Technology Company, a leading agritech startup in Nigeria, has been selected for the Qualcomm Make in Africa 2024 cohort. This competitive program supports the development of promising African startups across various industries. Qualcomm, a telecommunications giant, announced the news alongside the other shortlisted African ventures. Kitovu stood out from a highly competitive pool of roughly 250 applicants from 30 African countries. This is a major win for Kitovu and the Nigerian tech scene in general. By being chosen for the Qualcomm Make in Africa 2024 program, Kitovu gains access to valuable resources, mentorship, and potential funding opportunities. CLOSING THE GAP BETWEEN AGRITECH STARTUPS AND INVESTORS Agritech holds great promise as a driver of transformation in agriculture, especially in developing economies. The road, however, to unlocking this potential is fraught with challenges. For startups, securing the funding necessary to scale innovative solutions is not a child’s play. Global venture capital funding for agritech has cooled significantly. It contracted sharply by 44% from 2021 to 2022. Although the investment rebound seen in 2023 shows signs of renewed interest in countries like the U.S., the gap between agritech startups and investors is still wide in regions like Africa and the Middle East. Closing this gap demands strategic alignment, tailored funding models, and a deeper commitment to addressing the challenges.
