Curious about what our Regional Director for DACH, Dominique Ertl, has been up to lately (besides saving food, of course)? She’s been busy sharing her ideas in Tagesspiegel Background and FOCUS online on how Germany can tackle its massive food waste problem🍜🥬🥫 Spoiler alert: her ideas can be adopted by any country! Dominique's top recommendations? Germany should be at the forefront, setting legally binding food waste reduction targets to cut its food waste by 2030 in line with the EU Commission’s recommendations. Additionally, regular supermarkets should nudge customers to choose products nearing their expiration dates first, then complement those saved goodies with their usual picks. To make this happen, supermarkets need to elevate the status of these near-expiry items, using effective attention-grabbing techniques in stores and promoting them better than ordinary stock🙌 Read all of Dominique's advice in her opinion piece in Tagesspiegel and Fokus (in German, but no worries—AI translations are here to save the day). Europe can lead the way, but Germany is falling short of its potential when it comes to combating food waste. Every year, around 20 million tons of food are wasted in the EU — an insane figure that calls for bold action. Other countries are already taking a stand: 🇫🇷 France has laws that ban supermarkets from destroying unsold food. 🇮🇹 Italy offers incentives to donate food to those in need. But where does Germany stand? 🇩🇪 While there is some progress in the retail sector, Germany lacks legally binding targets. And perhaps even more concerning: the rest of the supply chain – from production to logistics – remains largely overlooked. Why does this matter? 👉🏼 Reducing food waste is one of the most effective actions we can take to combat climate change with often low investments 👉🏼 Donating or reselling overproduced food at lower price points supports lower income households in times of high living costs 👉🏼The EU has set clear goals, but Germany is lagging behind. What needs to change? To truly make an impact, we need to introduce binding commitments for the entire supply chain – from farm to fork. Europe has the chance to lead, but only if every player is held accountable. 👉 What do you think? What measures could push Germany to be bolder in the fight against food waste? German supermarkets are among the largest food retailers in Europe. Their size, and therefore their enormous purchasing and marketing power, gives them unprecedented influence on food production and consumption. The question this raises, to us at Questionmark Foundation, is to what extent these supermarkets use their influence to make the food system more sustainable. - Are their climate goals in line with Paris and do they have adequate plans to achieve these goals? - How do these supermarkets contribute to the necessary protein transition? - To what extent do these supermarkets contribute to the development of nature-inclusive agriculture? - Do their procurement policies prevent deforestation in palm oil and soy supply chains? Questionmark Foundation will answer these questions with the Superlist Environment Germany project, announced today. With the insights derived from Superlist, we will provide German supermarkets with direction in their sustainability strategies and kick off a race to the top among them. Moreover, Superlist insights will support German civil society in substantiating their advocacy work. Superlist Germany is part of Questionmark's broader Superlist program, also being implemented in the Netherlands, Belgium and tested in Sweden and the UK.
