The theme for this year's #InternationalWomensDay #IWD2024 is #InvestInWomen – here's why the theme is particularly important for the charity sector: ♦ Currently, just 1.8% of charitable grants go to women’s and girls’ organisations, and over half of these grants are less than £10,000. (via Rosa, the UK Fund for Women and Girls) ♦ There is a 'profound' gender imbalance in the UK charity sector, with women underrepresented in positions of power, despite making up the majority of charity sector employees. (via Pro Bono Economics) ♦ Interestingly, though women are more likely to volunteer than men, male trustees outnumbered female trustees by two to one. In a similar vein, women are more likely to give to charity but are less likely to be major philanthropists. (via Pro Bono Economics) ♦ Women in the charity sector are paid 4.1% less per hour than men after controlling for personal, job, occupational and sector characteristics. (via Law Family Commission on Civil Society) These impacts are most deeply felt by women of colour, disabled women, LGBT+ women, and others who encounter systemic disempowerment. Today, on #InternationalWomensDay, let's #InvestInWomen and work collectively towards a more equitable and inclusive charity sector. 🤝 International Women's Day

Impact on Girls: Malnutrition disproportionately affects girls, often due to cultural practices that result in them receiving less food and nutrients than boys. This leads to higher rates of malnutrition among female children, impacting their growth, health, and development. Addressing this gender disparity is crucial for ensuring equal opportunities and improving the well-being of all children. Focusing on the nutritional needs of girls is essential to break the cycle of malnutrition and promote gender equality. -------------- Please donate today here https://buff.ly/3R6imxs Find out how you can make a difference: https://buff.ly/3auP9MO info@joyafrica.foundation #joyafricafoundation #givejoytoday #givejoyeveryday #charity #nonprofit #donate #love #fundraising #community #support #help #volunteer #giveback #donation #fundraiser #education #dogood #children #socialgood #givingback #donations #philanthropy #hope #makeadifference #charityevent #helpingothers #nonprofitorganization #childhoodpoverty #childreninpoverty #homelesschild #streetchildren #orphans

I am so incredibly proud and humble to be included in this campaign of highlighting some of Ottawa's strong, valuable, and empowering women, leading the way to success. Imposter syndrome is real, but I won't let it get the best of me this time. As the saying goes, "A jack of all trades is a master of none, but oftentimes better than a master of one." In my professional career, I have certainly garnered the skills and experience to be an organizational-nonprofit-jack-of-all-trades-type, with finely tuned skills from project and volunteer management to safety and events planning. My career path which I've traveled purposefully down for over a decade in the nonprofit sector is true to who I am. Social responsibility is a big deal to me. I want to ensure that the impact I have leaves a positive mark on the organizations I work with, and in the community in which we live. There's another saying by which I stand by: "Nobody made a bigger mistake than he who did nothing because he could only do a little." This is the quote which I found ringing in my head at the tail end of the pandemic, and with tensions high in Canada's National Capital Region. I saw the struggle of local businesses, I saw a disconnected community, grasping for positivity. I couldn't eat delicious locally-made foods every night, and I couldn't endlessly buy locally-sold goods, but I could draw a little. As someone who has struggled with self-doubt, I'll admit that at that time, it was really tough to squash the self doubt and to offer my artistic services to local businesses as a means of putting a little colour and fun on their business windows. Some people close to me echoed doubtful what-ifs, but I considered this initial extension of a helping hand as what I could offer at the time. I offered this service free-of-charge at that moment and before I knew it, I had a large portfolio of art and a list of repeat paying clients. Acknowledge your value, relent to your tenacity and perseverance, and just do. You have the drive, you have the resiliency, you have the skills. In an effort to empower others in our community to see and #upskill the value that they bring to the table, to employers, to the community, and beyond, join me in supporting Dress For Success Ottawa National Capital Region 's #HERStory campaign this #WomensHistoryMonth. I've endeavored to raise $500 for them. You can donate here to my campaign: https://lnkd.in/gfvXPZvx Big, heartfelt thanks in advance for your support! Dress for Success is a nonprofit organization with chapters across the Globe. Their mission is to help unemployed and underemployed women achieve economic independence by providing no-fee programs, development tools, and professional attire to thrive in work and in life.
October is #WomensHistoryMonth, and that means it’s time for our fourth annual #HERstory Campaign! Follow along as we highlight 16 inspiring individuals over the next month. We are honoured to showcase this round up of remarkable leaders in the Ottawa community. It is our hope that their stories inspire you as much as they inspired our team! Each participant is fundraising to support women and gender nonconforming individuals who access #DFSOttawa services. By sharing their HERstory, they are empowering others to write their own. Visit the campaign website to check out all the profiles; if someone's story resonates with you, please consider donating ❤️ https://lnkd.in/er_sdHdU We hope you’ll join #DressForSuccess #Ottawa in celebrating Women's History Month with this exciting campaign! #WomenEmpoweringWomen

WHY THE LGBTQ+ MOVEMENT NEEDS LESS CHAMPAGNE AND MORE CAMPAIGN Nobody I know is that surprised at the “shocking” story of lavish spending at GLAAD. But the problem here isn’t GLAAD, the problem is the warped culture that’s developed around #LGBTQ+ fundraising and activism. GLAAD’s CEO Sarah Kate Ellis is a formidable campaigner for LGBTQ+ equality, and GLAAD has long been a supporter of our work at Open For Business. She’s not the real issue here, we have a bigger problem. There’s nothing wrong with using a bit of glamour and entertainment to get the dollars flowing. But I can tell you it’s painful to see a company decline to spend $30k backing vital work in, say, Uganda - and then watch them drop $100k on a couple of tables at a gala dinner. Meanwhile, US-based anti-LGBTQ+ groups are pumping hundreds of millions into places like East Africa and South-East Asia. It’s a well-funded and well-coordinated global campaign of hate – spreading disinformation, backing anti-LGBTQ+ politicians and pushing repressive legislation. Just three of these big anti-LGBTQ+ organizations reported a combined income of over $1 billion in 2021-2022, according to a report by Global Philanthropy Project. That’s more than the total funding for 8,000 LGBTI organisations across the world during the same years. That’s why it’s awful to see profligacy at the heart of the LGBTQ+ movement. I hope GLAAD doesn’t lose donors because of this – now more than ever, the US needs strong and effective LGBTQ+ organisations. But it’s time to re-focus on what really impacts the LGBTQ+ community globally. One of our coalition partners once told me, “The thing I love about Open For Business is that it’s more campaign than Champagne”. Maybe a few other LGBTQ+ organisations could tip the balance a little further in this direction.

Robert F. Smith The idea of leveraging philanthropy means that you want to increase the impact of the original donation. This is done by creating endowment funds rather than spending the money on products, services, or other operating costs. As a former CFO for a nonprofit with an $11.5M endowment fund, I've personally seen the impact of starting with a lump sum of money that grows to give some cash flow towards operating costs, but also continues to grow through proper investment management. Let's apply this to Black nonprofits. Imagine a Black nonprofit with experienced investment management staff who can increase the balance of an endowment by 8% - 10% per year safely using long-term, low risk investments. Half of the annual cash flow from the endowment fund is used towards operating and programmatic costs, which includes grants to other 501(c)3 qualified nonprofits. The remainder of the annual cash is reinvested to grow the endowment fund. The process requires a nonprofit board that has vision, discipline, and an experienced finance staff that knows what they are doing. So, who's ready to donate money to a Black nonprofit endowment fund? https://lnkd.in/gHcW3m26 (endowment fund coming soon)

Another powerful idea is establishing philanthropy-driven incubators specifically designed to support social entrepreneurs from underrepresented groups. These incubators would provide would provide funding but also mentorship, training, and access to networks that help turn innovative ideas into scalable businesses or initiatives. When I coached startups at Startup Stockholm, the gap wasn't the money, it was often effective communication and a thorough understanding of emotional intelligence. Why This Matters... Social entrepreneurship offers a sustainable pathway to effect change, but many potential social entrepreneurs lack the resources to get started. Success = Self-Sustainability! By supporting them through targeted incubators, philanthropy can empower a new generation of leaders who are deeply connected to the issues they are solving. This approach also ensures that philanthropic dollars are not just spent but invested in building self-sustaining solutions. #InnovativePhilanthropy #CollaborativeImpact #SocialEntrepreneurship #EmpowerCommunities #SustainableChange
