We just returned from our off-site team retreat in Los Cabos. And one of the buzzing words I heard a lot last week was “Single Threaded Owner”. The Single Threaded Owner concept from Amazon involves a team focusing on one task at a time and avoiding multitasking. As the name suggests, each team or person has a clear area of ownership that they always obsess about. As you may already know, we (Stan) are on our journey 🚀 to become a $1B company with 10 engineers. One of the core principles that brought us here is extreme ownership, i.e., being a single-threaded owner for any feature we build. You pick any part of the Stan, and we have one owner, single-threaded, focused on making it a success like Email Flow by Eddie Song, Multiple Google Calendars by Pavithran Pathmarajah, or Sales Tax by me. What if instead of hiring a team of 8 mediocre software engineers, you hired 2 superstars and paid them 4x as much? The small team will out-deliver the big one every time. The small team can make a decision on the walk to lunch. The big team needs a meeting. The small team minimizes moving parts because they create more work. The big team creates a moving part per engineer. The small team picks the technologies they're experts in. The big team picks what lets everyone participate. The small team's system is simple and minimizes operational burden. The big team's system is complex and needs a team to maintain it indefinitely. The small team has clear accountability for delivery. The big team masks accountability. ---- This scales to larger orgs too. Do you need 40 engineers or just 8 really good ones? Some famous examples: - Amazon S3 was built by 12 engineers. - Git, Minecraft, and Bittorrent were each written by 1 engineer. - When WhatsApp was acquired by Facebook, they had 950 million users and 35 engineers. I've seen it work first-hand at Row Zero. We operate under the superstar model. It's how we've built a spreadsheet that's 100x faster than Excel and 1000x faster than Google Sheets with an engineering team of 5.

3.4.24 - Dave's Weekly Software Engineering Job Ad Count 36,860 SDE job ads were posted this last week, 15% above the prior week’s total, 7% above its 6-week rolling avg., and 27% above its 13-week rolling avg. And that’s the basic outline for all the other major job ad categories we’re tracking: Continued growth in job ad numbers week-over-week, with this week’s totals being above both their respective 6-week, and 13-week rolling averages. Translation: Demand for Software Engineers, Product Managers and Program Managers is trending up! MAAMA Co’s For the last seven days, the MAAMA companies show the following counts for SDE job ads: • Apple: 0 (0% above the 13 week avg. of 0) • Google: 278 (93.78% above their 13-week avg. of 143) • Microsoft: 64 (-71.5% below their 13-week avg. of 225) • Amazon/AWS: 532 (38.7% above their 13-week avg. of 384) • Meta: 250 (58.5% above their 13-week avg. of 158) • Total: 1,124 (23.6% above their 13-week avg. of 909) The one notable bit in the MAAMA Co’s numbers is Amazon/AWS being out front of all the other members of this group for their 13-week avg., which likely means that Amazon/AWS has been adding more software engineers than the rest in this category for this time period. 2.5.24 - Dave's Weekly Software Engineering Job Ad Count 39,801 new SDE job ads as of Monday this week. This is an increase of 33% over the prior week’s count, and 65% above the rolling 6-wk avg (!). Further, there were 3,262 new Product Mgr job ads, an increase of 13% v. the prior week, and 17% above the rolling 6-wk avg; Program Mgr job ads were up by 54% v. the prior week (!), and 24% higher than the rolling 6-wk avg. I’m going to go out on a limb and say this is a breakout week for tech hiring in the U.S. But let’s be clear, while we’ve seen layoffs decline, we’re still seeing some tech firms getting rid of staff (but don't they seem like older tech firms?). And, there are a lot of people who were laid-off and have not yet found their next role. We’re not out of the woods yet, but we’re no longer going up the steep part of the trail. MAAMA Co’s For the last seven days, the MAAMA companies show the following counts for SDE job ads: • Apple: 0 • Google: 142 • Microsoft: 274 • Amazon/AWS: 468 • Meta: 2 • Total: 886 The total is within the high to low bands for this group of companies. Too, these numbers indicate that while the leaders are hiring (Amazon/AWS and Microsoft), there are others that are being cautious about their future staff spend (Apple, Meta, Google). On-site/hybrid/remote trends for SDE ads this week:  • On-site: 23,812 (60%) • Hybrid: 8,944 (22%) • Remote: 7,277 (18%) Note that these percentage breakdowns have been fairly consistent this quarter, and roughly at the percentages for this week. There are a lot of hot takes about whether we’ll go back to the office or if we’ll go remote, and given the consistency of these role openings, it looks like we’ll have our choice of whatever works best for us for a while. However, as we move forward this year, we’ll likely be hearing more about downtown core real estate shakeups in major tech centers in the U.S. (SFO, NYC, SEA, CHI, etc), which will indicate challenging times for commercial real estate firms. This will likely see office lease rates shifting, too. My hunch is that if leasing rates go up, more early-stage startups (Seed to C Round) will go fully remote, at least until they reach profitability.
