A human-centered approach to evaluating water insecurity? 🤝🚰 At Green Empowerment we have been working with UNICEF Ecuador, Dr. Gwyneth Lee of Rutgers University, and our partners in Ecuador to implement the HWISE scale (Household Water Insecurity Experiences scale) #WISELAC tool in remote communities. Households answer 4 - 12 questions about their experience accessing water, then this data is analyzed to create a water insecurity score. People’s own perceptions of how they interact with water is the primary data. Our Water & Sanitation Lead, Samuel Schlesinger, presented our initial findings at the #UNCWaterConference. Check out his presentation here (@53:55) 🎥➡️ https://lnkd.in/gT4FnR5p -- For more context watch from minute 45:20 for an accompanying presentation from UNICEF Ecuador. Stay tuned for more updates on how we are implementing HWISE in the new year!

In collaboration with the Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS) and eight Water and Sanitation Community Forums (WSCFs), and supported by the Water Research Commission (WRC), IWMI’s project on ‘Institutionalizing inclusive community-led planning of water supply in Integrated Development Plan (IDP) and Water Services Development Plan (WSDP)’ examined the institutional issues that seem to ignore ordinary community members in South Africa's under-resourced settings. Based on this experience and evidence, the project recommends: 🏛️ Institutionalizing WSCFs in the IDP structure 🔄 Revitalizing the IDP 💧 Promoting active community participation in the water sector. "At the current speed" Who do we want to point the finger at? When you read 'Sustainable Development Goals Report 2024', Goal 6 - report on Clean water and sanitation, it will make you reflect after seeing the words 'At the current speed'. We made many plans for 'accelerating change ' last year. A year later we criticize our own plans by calling it 'At the current speed'.. what happened to the speed plan we had? What happened to the 'working four times faster' approach to achieve SDG 6 on time? Or the concept was just well known around directors, managers, and water experts. Where was the role of the community? I still believe solving the water and sanitation crisis needs everyone’s effort and commitment. It's time to localize water information to the communities for a better future. ➡️ Read more: https://lnkd.in/dMqMEjrH #WaterCrisis #SDGreport United Nations Water WaterAid East Africa Simavi Sanitation and Water for All - a UNICEF-hosted global partnership J. 💧 In the face of increased frequency of extreme weather events, natural disasters, public #health crises, and economic pressures, the equitable provision of #water and #sanitation services is now more critical than ever. To advance this mission, Parties to the UNECE-WHO/Europe Protocol on Water and Health, and other pan-European countries and international and civil society organizations, as well as water and sanitation service providers, recently launched the Equitable Access Score-card 2.0, a thoroughly revised tool designed to help countries create a baseline measure and assess progress in reducing disparities in access to water and sanitation. Since its initial introduction over a decade ago, the original Equitable Access Score-card has been applied in 14 countries and provided valuable insights for targeted policy measures. The revised tool includes newly introduced dimensions, such as the ability to assess the #emergency preparedness and response of water and sanitation service providers, and the explicit #participation and access to information of vulnerable and marginalized groups in processes related to ensuring their access to safe drinking water, sanitation, and #hygiene.
