We were excited to share our poster presentation led by URT MSP Coordinator, Emmanuel M. Mpina, entitled "Marine Spatial Planning (MSP) and Ocean Governance: Strengthening the Blue Economy (BE) of the United Republic of Tanzania (URT) through Ecosystem Services and Effective Biodiversity Conservation” during The 7th International Marine Conservation Congress this week. We shared our experiences from the URT MSP Scoping phase with many attendees at the #IMCC7 conference, highlighting the strong partnership that The Nature Conservancy has with the Government of Tanzania. We conducted a scoping study on the state of MSP, focusing on policy, legal, and administrative analysis, as well as a spatial data audit, between July 2022 and June 2023. The study involved consultations with over 314 stakeholders and laid a strong foundation to undertake full-scale MSP. Specifically, our analysis revealed eight sectoral scopes to be considered in the MSP process, and we made 23 recommendations to support the country's blue economy development. As part of the next steps, The Nature Conservancy is positioned to work with the Government of Tanzania and partners to implement a Stakeholder Engagement Strategy, support the National MSP Framework, conduct a Strategic Environmental and Social Assessment, and develop Zoning Plans. Citizen science for nature conservation has been thriving in Hungary, but it hasn't gained enough attention. A new publication co-evaluates 8 key Hungarian nature conservation-related citizen science projects (NCCS), assessing their impact on science, conservation, and participant development. Alexandra Czeglédi from ESSRG contributed to this work, which not only highlights the scientific and societal value of these projects but also boosts the visibility of successful initiatives in Central Eastern Europe. #CitizenScience #NatureConservation #Hungary #CentralEasternEurope #Research https://lnkd.in/dkgKYVyV

NEW PAPER -our analysis of how #equity is conceptualised in key global #conservation policy reveals a lack of clarity, varying comprehensiveness and a focus on resource distribution. Thanks Georgina Gurney for your support in getting this published! Published #openaccess at One Earth by Cell Press with Tiffany Morrison & Joshua Cinner https://lnkd.in/gS8efATD We find that the comprehensiveness of conservation policies in covering key equity principles varies considerably. For example, the UN Biodiversity Global Biodiversity Framework #KMGBF is one of the most thorough, but it lacks key aspects related to equitable decision-making and mitigating negative impacts on communities. Guidance on how to foster equity in conservation practice should be a key focus at #COP16Colombia. If you're in Cali, see the side event on "Advancing #Rights & #Equity in the Implementation of Target 3+" (18:00 29th October) including discussion of our working papers on area-based conservation &: 1) a roadmap for advancing equity & rights https://shorturl.at/2CEgp 2) equity https://lnkd.in/gcj6Auex 3) human rights-based approaches

🪸 The Red List of Ecosystems #ForCoral Today, ICRI in partnership with the Reef Resilience Network, CORDIO East Africa, IUCN and MSC Foundation hosted a successful webinar, as part of the #ForCoral series, showcasing the critical role of the IUCN Red List of Ecosystems (RLE) in #coralreef conservation and its alignment with the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework #GBF. We welcomed over 5️⃣0️⃣ participants from around the world 🌎 with translation into Spanish 🇪🇸 and French 🇫🇷. Key highlights included: 🔹 An overview of the RLE’s framework and its value as a headline indicator for the GBF. 🔹 Insights from the Western Indian Ocean (WIO) Coral Reef RLE, a case study demonstrating how regional assessments can guide conservation. 🔹 Introduction of technical tools like an online code repository, data-sharing standards, and assessment templates, which will empower other Global Coral Reef Monitoring Network (GCRMN) regions to implement RLE assessments. A huge thank you to our incredible speakers, including Marcos Valderrabano, Emily Nicholson, Mishal Gudka, David Obura, Franz Smith, Karin Moejes and to Marina Anselme, PhD. for opening the session. Their expertise underscored the importance of #collaboration, data-sharing, and #capacitybuilding to drive meaningful coral conservation. The presentations and recording will be available soon on the dedicated events page 🔗 https://lnkd.in/eXyUaQ8g
