Please read this interesting study by the Mærsk Mc-Kinney Møller Center for Zero Carbon Shipping about battery powered deep sea shipping. Let’s make small incremental steps reducing emissions. Why not using battery energy storage for the hotel load / pumps / cranes while at anchor ⚓️ or in a port? Make zero-emission port calls? Peak shaving? Reducing stand-by generators? Store excess energy? Other applications? EST-Floattech | Energy Storage Solutions makes this possible. Containerised certified maritime energy storage is available. Shall we just start doing it or wait longer? Who is first moving? “Fit for (sustainable) future: #Onshorepowersupply gaining ground in European #ports “ July 16, 2024, - Naida Hakirevic Prevljak “Ports in Europe are increasingly implementing #shorepower projects in an effort to stay ahead of the global #decarbonization game and comply with #EUregulations .” “Shore power, #shoresideelectricity , #coldironing , and #shoretoshippower are terms used in relation to ships connecting directly to power sources on shore. Shore power systems are mostly #gridconnected , however, there are also mobile configurations.” “While in port, #vessels use their #auxiliaryengines to #produceelectricity . With the use of an onshore power supply that allows ship engines to be switched off, #emissions from ships’ engines can be eliminated. In addition, shore power helps #reducenoise , #vibration and #airpollution resulting from the use of #fossilfuels by #ships .” “A 2022 feasibility study by Aberdeen Harbour found that #greenshorepower could #reduceemissions in ports by more than 90% as well as minimize #noise and air pollution levels. When shore power facility is completely supplied by #greenelectricity , the #GHGemissions reduction could be around 100%.” https://lnkd.in/eZGTpvrz Source- original post Read all my posts #MariusPreston

In 2001, Juneau became one of the first ports in the world to electrify its cruise ship dock, allowing visiting ships to turn off their polluting diesel engines and rely on local hydropower while in port In 2024, the Port of Seward has won a $46 million federal grant to electrify its port and add battery storage. “By reducing reliance on diesel generators, we are not only cutting emissions but also enhancing the resilience of our local electric grid," said Seward Mayor Sue McClure. From oil field operations to cruise ship terminals, Alaska needs to continue to electrify its economy. This should reduce electric rates, cut pollution, and provide the economic base for the large-scale deployment of renewable energy. https://lnkd.in/gzJpdEUy

Hurtigruten Group reveals updated plans for its zero-emission cruise ship “The cruising industry is a significant polluter, and it is crucial that we now take major steps to reduce emissions. Our goal is to have an emission-free ship in operation by around 2030. We are still in the research and development phase, but we have made significant progress,” said Hedda Felin, CEO of Hurtigruten. The company's calculations show that the #SeaZero ship will use about 40-50% less energy than today’s ships, which makes it possible to operate primarily on batteries and sails as the main energy source.
