Our Directors Elaine Warwicker and Hayley Parker attended the event between the Honourable Company of Gloucestershire, and the University of Gloucestershire where David Owen shared the Gloucestershire economic growth strategy. It was great to understand the growth plans for the county for the next 25 years, with the 3 key priorities underpinning the achievement of the vision highlighted as: - Business innovation and growth - Continuing to build skills and employment - Transitioning to being carbon neutral Exciting plans ahead! And with big ambition comes the need to have not only a clear vision, but clear objectives to achieve it, as highlighted by Ruth Dooley who was a great chair for the event. This coupled with David’s “how do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time” comment when explaining the ambition for the county and taking it forward, along with the importance of alignment and collaboration so that all stakeholders achieve together, really resonated with us as it’s these key areas that underpin all of our work with clients. #ImprovingPerformanceTogether #GrowthStrategy #GloucestershireEconomicGrowthStrategy

What does the future for public-private collaboration in the built environment look like? Back in September, we co-hosted a discussion over dinner at the Annual The Labour Party Conference, bringing together senior leaders from across the industry to debate this question. It is timely to reflect on the conversation, given a lot of what we talked about was revisited in last week’s #AutumnBudget. #PlanningReform can unlock collaboration. Planning reform, though not a catch-all, will be crucial for accelerating the national renewal agenda, and for helping the private sector play a leading role on the delivery of new infrastructure and investment. The appointment of Poppy Gustafsson OBE as Minister for Investment is a step in the right direction, as is an expanded scope for our metropolitan mayors. Stability and consistency are paramount. While the new #PublicSectorReform and #InnovationFund and extended UK Shared Prosperity Fund should help provide stability, other measures are needed. Standardising procurement processes and encouraging housing innovation will be key. Existing towns and cities need #regeneration, too. While the #NewTowns programme is a positive long-term plan, it can only be part of a wider strategy. New neighbourhoods in our existing cities can also help spearhead the regeneration effort – as shown by our recent contribution to the transformation of East London’s #RoyalWharf and Paradise Birmingham. We look forward to continuing the discussion and collaborating with this Government as now is the time for the private sector to take a leading role. Thanks to ING Media for organising the event and to everyone who took part in the discussion. 🌟 Next up in our "Voices of Leadership" series is Tracy Brabin, Mayor of West Yorkshire. 🌟 “It’s a huge privilege to be Mayor. It’s an amazing job and I’m surprised more people don’t want to do it. 👁️🗨️ My vision is a cleaner, greener West Yorkshire that works for everyone. We have a target of zero carbon by 2038 but to get there we have to tackle our transport problem. Too many people use their cars to get around, so mass transit is at the heart of that plan. It’s a huge £2.5 billion investable proposition to connect all of West Yorkshire, not just in Leeds, and it includes better buses and more active travel too.🚏 🌿 I also want to help businesses to decarbonise their processes and we've got £10 million allocated for that. We're focusing on skills too because there's no point having a retrofit program if you don't have the skills base and the innovation to do that. And we’re also fostering innovation - those fledgling businesses with a great idea – we’re working with universities to support them with seed finance. But my biggest leadership challenge is we haven’t had the leadership from central government. As Mayor I can announce something but businesses won't come with me if there isn’t a clear direction of travel from the centre. That stability of vision is so important. Devolution is a game changer. That's how we can work more collaboratively locally. We're going to get two more Mayors in Yorkshire and I'm hoping that all four Mayors will be a real force of nature when it comes to leading Yorkshire’s new industrial revolution. Our region played a part in the first industrial revolution - we were part of the problem you might say - but we are also going to be the solution.” 🗣 Stay tuned for more inspiring voices in our series! 📍 https://lnkd.in/ewZ-9247 #Leadership #Sustainability #Innovation #WestYorkshire #Devolution #GreenFuture West Yorkshire Combined Authority 3Ci (Cities Commission for Climate Investment)

Stephen Hilton writes about being a creative bureaucrat ahead of our Bristol Ideas creative bureaucracy day, 23 April 2024. 'It seems evident that the era of small, incremental changes has passed. Instead, substantial “paradigm-level” shifts are now imperative to shield communities from the harmful effects of excessively extractive, market-driven approaches that pervade all aspects of life and imperil the planet. 'Transitioning towards a public-commons partnership model of governance is essential, avoiding the commodification of public services and resources. This shift underscores the necessity of fostering collaborative relationships between the public sector, communities, and civil society. By embracing this approach, local authorities can re-prioritise citizens’ long-term well-being. Through co-investment in community-led initiatives, participatory decision-making processes, and resource-sharing, communities are empowered to co-create solutions tailored to their unique needs. This strategy aims to amplify impact by nurturing interconnected networks of locally-driven approaches, departing from traditional top-down solutions that struggle to adapt to the swiftly changing landscape.' 🏗✨ We need action to bring major regeneration projects forward more quickly. That’s according to our CEO and Co-Chair of the True North network, Robert White, who has spoken to Insider Media about the roadblocks that such projects face and the negative impact this is having on the North’s prosperity. “In addition to the time and cost involved in securing the funding for major projects in the first place, communities in the North appear to also be facing increased bureaucracy throughout the development process”, says Robert. "Feedback from stakeholders in the property and construction industry — particularly at our quarterly Building Links networking events for business leaders — is that the planning system is one of the biggest hindrances to development projects across all sectors. Arguably the most disappointing aspect of how lengthy and bureaucratic it appears to be to bring major development projects forward in the North is how this seems to contrast with some major schemes benefitting other parts of the country — in particular the South East.” ➡ Get Robert’s full perspective: https://lnkd.in/eGDr5EsV ➡ Find out how True North is working to drive progress and address the chasm between Northern productivity and prosperity: https://lnkd.in/eqv-5zf5 #BrabnersTrueNorth
