Back in December 2022, SevenFifty Daily posted about wine trends to watch for in 2023. Their leading one was regarding sustainability: "There was a time when consumers were unconcerned with monocropping and chemicals, and cares dissolved with the uncorking of a heavy glass bottle. Not anymore. Wine drinkers are asking questions about how grapes are grown, workers are treated, and wine is packaged. They want wines that align with their values, and their values are focused on a sustainable future". This is not just a trend, but fast becoming a way of life. If your company and products are not on already on a journey to achieve holistic sustainability, best you start. #winebusiness #sustainability #winenz #SWNZ #carbonzero

Wine producers excel in the art of winemaking, not packaging. However, in light of environmental concerns and the urgency of the climate crisis, it’s crucial to reassess #packaging due to its significant impact on the carbon footprint of wine production. In partnership with the Slow Wine Coalition, a thematic network of Slow Food, we are holding an immersion workshop for *members which will dive deeper into topics regarding primary, secondary, and tertiary packaging for the #wineindustry. This workshop will -explore the complexities of wine packaging -feature various guest speakers who will share their experiences and expertise in the field -evaluate the advantages and drawbacks of each solution *This workshop is available for members of The Porto Protocol and the Slow Wine Coalition. Registration links available on our website. This online workshop will include two sessions SESSION I – Understanding and addressing the environmental impact of wine packaging SESSION II – Collaborative Session on challenges solutions and future opportunities – the producer’s perspective Learn more about our current and past projects involving sustainable wine packaging on our website. "🍷 Summer picnic wine debate: bottle, box or bag? 🍷 Summer is here, and that means enjoying wine outdoors! But when it comes to packaging, what's the best option: bottle, box or bag? Wine in a Box: It's convenient and eco-friendly. But what if we removed the cardboard to further reduce packaging waste? Did you know? • Cardboard packaging for boxed wine adds an extra 60-70 grams of weight. • Removing the cardboard could reduce packaging waste by up to 40%. • Bottles produce approximately 500g of CO2 per litre during production, whereas boxed wine generates about 150g per litre, making boxed wine three times more eco-friendly. The question is, should we remove the cardboard to make it even more responsible? Your input matters! How do you prefer your wine packaged for those summer picnics? Should we prioritise reducing packaging even further? Call to action: Join the conversation! Share your thoughts on responsible wine packaging in the comments below. Lots of discussion over the recyclability of Tetra Pack in the comments here. Worth remembering that 'recyclable' doesn't always mean recycled, and certainly doesn't always mean circular. Reuse needs to become a reality on a much larger scale than we currently achieve. We need to stop relying on recycling which gives both the producer, and the end user, the feeling that they've 'done their bit', irrespective of whether the packaging actually gets effectively recycled or not. Interesting piece on the recyclability of Tetra Pack (from March 2023) here: https://lnkd.in/epKYXJ4i
Is boxed wine better?? Viavino has made some very tasty wine in a Tetra Pak Is this the new way of wine?? EVELIO MATTOS might be under consideration for the #packaging innovation #UnAward ?

This week's final Profitability Series focus is: 💲 Profitability Series Part 5: More Serving Sizes, No Waste On-Premise operators who offer customers more wine by-the-glass serving size options and wine flights generally sell more wine. Smaller serving sizes encourage experimentation without expectations a sample will be provided free of charge. Larger serving sizes are an opportunity to sell incrementally more wine to a customer who may still view two glasses as excessive. The problem with using bottles to offer more serving sizes is that you increase the risk of oxidized wine waste. Oxidized wine waste is never a concern when serving wine on tap with Free Flow Wins' reusable steel kegs. Even if you tapped all new kegs to pour a wine flight and then closed down for weeks or even months, when you start serving guests again the wine would be just as fresh as the first pour. This worry-free freshness guarantees that you will see all of the revenue generating upside from offering more serving sizes without potential downside.

9moGood think is that we offset the carbon when drink beer because some is incorporated that’s why we have the sparkling bubbles 😅
