Over the last 1.5 years, I stopped relying on Shopify's built-in conversion tracking and went all in with Google Tag Manager (GTM) for my clients. Here’s why— Shopify's native tracking is easy to set up, but it has its limitations. It felt too restrictive for the advanced strategies my clients needed. I kept hitting walls and working around those restrictions, which wasn’t sustainable for long-term growth. Here are some of the biggest issues I’ve seen with relying solely on Shopify's built-in tracking: 🔄 Missed data in multi-step funnels – Without proper funnel tracking, critical customer behaviors get lost, making it harder to optimize conversions. 🔄 Limited event tracking – Native Shopify only captures basic actions like page views or purchases, but misses custom events like form submissions or in-depth product interactions. 🔄 Inaccurate data – Browser restrictions, cookie limitations, and ad blockers can hurt your tracking accuracy. GTM with server-side tagging solves that. Shopify tracking is perfect for beginners, but GTM gives you complete control and deeper insights. This shift has allowed me to deliver more accurate data and drive better results for my clients. If you're still relying on Shopify’s built-in tracking, let’s chat—I can show you how GTM can unlock advanced strategies for your store! #Shopify #GoogleTagManager #ConversionTracking #EcommerceMarketing #DataDriven

You can’t manage without measuring. If you’re running a Shopify store and Google ads, this is very true. One of the biggest problems I see with accounts is that the tracking set-up is often incomplete or incorrect. Sometimes no conversions are being tracked at all, meaning the account has no way of telling you if you’re getting profitable results, or any at all. I get it, they don’t make it easy. Add into the mix, the Shopify checkout extensibility upgrade. This is the new framework which aims to make it easier for all Shopify sellers to customise their checkout experiences, using apps rather than code. If your team or developers have set up tracking via additional scripts, these will need reviewing & updating. As I’m currently doing this process for clients, I thought I’d share some things to look for: Checking your home and order confirmation pages for tags to see what’s been set up. Moving from using scripts to setting up custom pixel-based tracking for conversion tracking and dynamic re-marketing, GA4 and Google Tag Manager. Ensuring that your events pull through monetary values in your e-commerce reports in GA4 via Google Analytics 4 revenue tracking. Removing old tags - for example, Universal Analytics, and any associated audiences within Google Ads. Also updating your custom audiences with new page/url parameters. So, make sure you’ve made the necessary changes to keep your tracking accurate and to have confidence in your investment & results. To support you, I’m offering 2 free audits to Shopify stores to look at your set-up and recommend fixes. DM me to apply. #GoogleAds #PPC #Shopify

🚨 NEW! Upgrade Your Google Ads Conversion Tracking using Shopify's "Customer Events" Pixel Tracking Feature! Yesterday, I had a productive call with the Google Technical Solutions Team, troubleshooting my Shopify tracking. They introduced me to a fantastic new feature called "Customer Events" that simplifies the process. For all my fellow advertisers, here's a quick guide to setting up New Shopify Pixel Tracking for Google Ads using Customer Events: 1. Head to your Shopify store admin. 2. Navigate to 𝐒𝐞𝐭𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐬. 3. Look for the new 𝐂𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐫 𝐄𝐯𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐬 section and click on it. 4. Create a new 𝐂𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐦 𝐏𝐢𝐱𝐞𝐥 and give it a clear name (e.g., "Google Ads Tracking"). 4. Remove any existing demo script. 5. Paste the 𝐆𝐨𝐨𝐠𝐥𝐞 𝐀𝐝𝐬 𝐄𝐧𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞𝐝 𝐓𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐒𝐜𝐫𝐢𝐩𝐭 (see comments for the script). 𝐏𝐫𝐨 𝐓𝐢𝐩: Make sure to connect the pixel after saving the script for it to work! P.S. I'll add the Google Ads Enhanced Tracking Script in the comments below. This new Shopify feature makes setting up conversion tracking for Google Ads much easier. Plus, Google claims this method offers even more accurate data compared to previous tracking methods. 🚀 Let me know in the comments if you have any questions, and feel free to share your experience with Shopify Customer Events! #GoogleAds #Shopify #ConversionTracking #ecommerce

ICYMI - Shopify is currently rolling out a big ol' checkout upgrade (with a fancy title!) called 'checkout extensibility' This has had a huge impact when running Google Ads for Shopify, particularly as it completely changes the way we need to setup conversion tracking. Having managed this transition across a bunch of client accounts, we've uncovered several critical issues affecting Google Ads performance. 📊 Key Issues We're Seeing: 1. Conversion Tracking Disruptions 2. Revenue Data Inconsistencies 3. Audience Segmentation Problems 4. Order Confirmation Page Anomalies 🔍 Essential Action Items for Your Store: 1. Tracking Setup Migration - Move ALL tracking from settings > checkout > additional scripts - Implement new tracking through settings > customer events > pixels - Legacy additional scripts functionality is being retired 2. Additional Scripts Management - Keep the "additional scripts" box active during transition - Even if empty, this prevents conversion tracking drops - Monitor order confirmation page URLs for consistency 3. Audience List Verification - Check all "buyers" audience lists - Update URL conditions to match new order confirmation paths - Review audience segments for data continuity 4. GA4 Revenue Tracking - Audit your revenue reporting - Verify transaction data accuracy - Check integration points between Shopify and GA4 5. Theme Code Updates - Migrate Google Ads code to customer events > pixels - Remove redundant dynamic remarketing code - Clean up legacy GTM implementations 6. Domain Configuration - Verify order confirmation pages use your domain - Check orders > view order status page URLs - Configure settings > domains if using shopify.com URLs 7. Legacy Code Cleanup - Remove Universal Analytics (UA) code - Review sales channels > online store > preferences - Clean up deprecated Google Analytics implementations 🚨 Important Note: Each store has it's own nuances! and we are in continual contact with support to fix these tracking issues as they occur. 💡 Key Takeaways: - Document your current setup before making changes - Monitor your conversion tracking daily - Stay informed about upcoming Shopify updates - Review your tracking setup regularly We'll continue sharing updates as Shopify rolls out more changes! I've hit 765 daily clicks on a new Shopify store in 72 days. (We're on target for 7 figures ARR within 16 months) 1000s of new customers are hitting our funnels. I posted this campaign case study update 1 week ago. (Link in comments for what's been done) The organic clicks are continuing to rocket. ----- With traffic volume hitting pages, I can now: - Monitor traffic trends - Use MS Clarity to audit template quality - Find new opportunities in GSC - Check conversion paths in GA4 - Testing hierarchy structure from root to PDPs - Owning target topic market-share It's a cool place to be in. We have 1000s of keywords climbing to Google's page 2. I plan to increase/compound transactional traffic every 2 weeks. ----- What I'm working on now? I break my Shopify strategies into tailored sprints. It helps the brands I work with to get results. So I'm working on: - 30 day sprints (sprints will contain loops) - Each sprint has a specific goal - I don't use any fancy tools - I keep the plan of attack simple - Audit loops for crawling/opportunities - CRO audit loops I use the same plan with every Shopify store I work with. ----- The strategy's looking good, eh? The traction in under 90 days has been insane. #SEO | #Shopify
