This is 🔥 - What Great Listeners Actually Do 1) Good listening is much more than being silent while the other person talks 2) Good listening included interactions that build a person’s self-esteem. 3) Good listening was seen as a cooperative conversation. 4) Good listeners tended to make suggestions. While many of us have thought of being a good listener being like a sponge that accurately absorbs what the other person is saying, instead, what these findings show is that good listeners are like trampolines. They are someone you can bounce ideas off of — and rather than absorbing your ideas and energy, they amplify, energize, and clarify your thinking. They make you feel better not merely passively absorbing, but by actively supporting. This lets you gain energy and height, just like someone jumping on a trampoline.

Most people think good listening comes down to doing three things: -Not talking when others are speaking -Letting others know you’re listening through facial expressions and verbal sounds (“Mmm-hmm”) -Being able to repeat what others have said, practically word-for-word But it turns out that these assumptions are not entirely accurate…To the contrary, people perceive the best listeners to be those who periodically ask questions that promote discovery and insight. These questions gently challenge old assumptions, but do so in a constructive way. Great article that explains how we often misinterpret the obvious because of inherent preconceptions.

Different from what most people think, good listening comes down to: 👂 Much more than being silent while the other person talks: to the contrary, people perceive the best listeners to be those who periodically ask questions that promote discovery and insight. 🌟 Interactions that build a person’s self-esteem: the best listeners make the conversation a positive experience for the other party, which doesn’t happen when the listener is passive (or, for that matter, critical!). 🤝 Cooperative conversation: in these interactions, feedback flows smoothly in both directions with neither party becoming defensive about comments the other made. 💡 Make suggestions: good listening invariably includes some feedback provided in a way others would accept and that opened up alternative paths to consider. Or are you a passive listener? 🤐 Not talking when others are speaking 😌 Letting others know you’re listening through facial expressions and verbal sounds (“Mmm-hmm”) 🔁 Being able to repeat what others have said, practically word-for-word

As you consider being a better listener, it is also helpful to note that truly listening requires abandoning your own thoughts, comments, and responses while the other person is sharing. The goal is to connect with and understand where the other person is coming from before you offer your perspective or your advice.

What do great listeners do? How to truly tune in and connect with others is at the heart of this insightful #PsychologyToday article by Ellen Hendriksen Ph.D. Great listeners go beyond hearing words—they create a safe, judgment-free space where others feel seen and valued. They practice active listening, ask thoughtful questions, and show empathy without rushing to solve or respond. Hendriksen emphasizes that listening is a skill we can all improve by being present, maintaining open body language, and suspending our inner dialogue. Mastering these techniques strengthens relationships, builds trust, and fosters deeper connections. #ActiveListening #Empathy #CommunicationSkills #Connection #EmotionalIntelligence #MindfulListening #Relationships #PsychologyToday
