Delta Air Lines has announced a partnership with sportsbook DraftKings, but details remain scarce for now. While gambling on U.S. commercial flights has been illegal since 1962, history shows repeated attempts to change the law. Airlines like Northwest and TWA tried in the 1990s to replicate the success of gambling on cruise ships, but efforts stalled. Even Singapore Airlines experimented with slot machines in 1981, though technical issues derailed the initiative. Fast-forward to today, and Delta’s partnership suggests a focus on more practical offerings, such as in-flight games or SkyMiles-sports betting integrations. If in-flight gambling becomes legal, the revenue potential is staggering. A 1996 Department of Transportation study estimated airlines could earn over $1 million per aircraft annually—equivalent to $1.3 billion today for a major airline like Delta. While it’s too soon to expect in-flight parlays, this partnership points to a lucrative future for airlines in the evolving gambling space.

Live Nation Entertainment (LNE) - the global leader in the live entertainment industry – is set to acquire a majority stake in MEO Arena, Portugal’s largest concert venue. On 21 November 2024, the Portuguese Competition Authority (PCA) conditionally approved LNE’s acquisition of an indirect controlling interest in Ritmos & Blues and MEO Arena. The Decision followed a Phase II investigation by the PCA into concerns on restrictions to access to MEO Arena for competitors in the markets for live event promotion and ticketing services. The commitments proposed by LNE ensure fair, reasonable and non-discriminatory access to rivals.
