“Silent Achiever Chronicles” Well, I am on the road again and away from my desk so reactions and comments can be slow to come - Day 1. I found this particularly hard to write. I am not a self-promoter; I prefer to let my work speak for itself. In the world where self-promoting is often the center stage of things, I choose to instead go down a different path. I am not the one of those that trumpets my own horn. My approach is simple: Let my work do the talking. Regardless of what I do, I pour my heart and soul into it focusing on excellence and impact. Here's why I embrace this approach: 1. Less Noise, More Substance: For me substance is far more important than the noise of self-promotion. This what my focus is totally on the value I bring to the table. 2. Trust: By consistently delivering quality work, I build trust with colleagues, clients, and collaborators. They know they can rely on me. 3. Authenticity: When I let my work shine, it reflects who I truly am. No need for flashy self-promotion; the results speak for themselves. 4. Confidence: Confidence doesn’t require grand declarations. It’s the quiet assurance that comes from knowing you’ve given your best. I trust that others will recognize it too. Don't be mistaken though, I am by no means an introvert and am very much a people's person. So, next time you wonder about my accomplishments, don’t expect a flashy pitch. Instead, look at what I’ve created, the problems I’ve solved, and the impact I’ve made. That’s where you’ll find the real story. 12 NOTES-TO-SELF FROM 12 MONTHS OF MANAGING CHANGE I recently completed 12 months in my new role, leading Tata Steel Aashiyana. Never before have any 12 months felt like such a treasure hunt for insights and wisdom. From a year replete with realisations, my double-underlined takeaways have been that to outgrow yourself is an excellent way to grow, to 'hold your strong opinions loosely’ is a great way to evolve. In the hope that I conserve what I have gathered along the way, I am setting down some important notes I posted to myself through the last year, those that shaped my personal growth. Here they are: 1. As a leader, your job is not to have the brightest idea in the room but to spot the brightest idea in the room. 2. Your biggest KRA is to build thought clarity. 3. The most potent tools you have are empathy, storytelling, curiosity. 4. Follow the counter-intuitive path of questioning your beliefs and adding caveats to your decisions. You will build more credibility that way. 5. The most difficult challenge you would face is to balance humility and open-mindedness with decisiveness. 6. Practice perspective-taking; it will make you more persuasive. 7. People tend to meet expectations. Have high expectations, believe. 8. Trying to make your people's profiles more attractive is a great way to elevate their KRAs and therefore their contribution. 9. Empathy does not translate into 'let it be'; sometimes, it's good to shake comfort zones. 10. When dealing with difficult stakeholders, follow the maxim of 'hating the sin, not the sinner'. 11. Minimalism could be an incredible weapon for success. Declutter your goals, institute processes, believe in priorities. 12. The cliche is true. 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝗳 𝗮 𝘁𝗼𝗽 𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗲𝗿 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲𝘀 𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗿 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗴𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻? Many mid-career professionals go through this, and that's the same problem one of my coachees faced. In January this year, Rahul (Name changed) approached me after attending my masterclass and shared his story. Rahul has been working as a IT professional (as an AVP - Data Analysis) , and he was once recognized as the top performer in the organization. However, his growth after 17 years has stagnated. From being a top performer in his career, he was rated an average performer. Shocking, right? He was perplexed; he shared that he was the same person who contributed significantly as a top performer, and now why does the company feel he is not good enough? His seniors could not put a finger on the issue and suggested that he should work on building a leadership mindset. This impacted his confidence leading to confusion, frustration, & eventually wanting to change his job. He was intrigued How to build Leadership Mindset. That led him towards 𝗖𝗫𝗢 𝗶𝗻𝗰𝘂𝗯𝗮𝘁𝗼𝗿 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗴𝗿𝗮𝗺. Once he was onboarded to the CXO Incubator platform, we started working on the root cause of this challenge. Throughout the nine-week program, we worked deeply to understand him, his story, his aspirations, his dreams, his strengths and what he wants out of his career and life. We worked closely with him to develop growth habits. Helped him identify his potential, personality, passion, interest, & core values. We also provide him with the practical frameworks to widen his network, build his emotional resilience, his confidence, his leadership narration, create his vision board, & identify his purpose statement. Through this journey, he took actions that helped him change his personality, bring out the best in him and communicate with his superiors at work in a way that helped them see him as a contributor. Last week during his annual appraisal, his boss told him - “This time when we are doing your appraisal, I am seeing a very different person in front of me. I see someone strong, someone with an intention, someone who is a thinker and who is conducting like a leader. The last 3 months you are changed person.” It was a delight to hear that he was chosen to be part of Leadership Think Tank of his organisation. Well, I don't know any magic, I just help individuals realize their potential, bring out the best in them so that they become an asset to their organization and ascend to lead as a Purpose-drive Leader. The model I have created with an ecosystem of mentors and a community of high-performing professionals adds extra energy to push each of them into the growth zone. Being an immigrant in the US taught me more about leadership than any corporate training ever could. Here’s the reason why: Coming to a country like the USA was a big cultural shock. The people, lifestyle, outlook and quality of life was way different than in India. India was still developing in the organized retail sector while America had a well-established system ready for their customers. When I started my corporate journey here, my suggestions and new ideas were different from the other people working there.  It took a while for people to understand where I was coming from. But that difference? 👉 It ended up being my greatest asset. The organization considered my suggestions and this helped me and my team create better strategies and work better as a unit. Once the results were delivered, I started climbing the ladder and met many diverse people throughout my journey. And when I started leading the team,  my very own experience of bringing a fresh perspective to the projects helped me understand the value of listening and working together as a unit. It helped me realize that – Your perspective might be different, but it doesn’t mean that it is wrong. Looking back, I’m grateful for every challenge. It wasn’t always easy, but those moments shaped who I am as a person today. And overcoming these hurdles gave me the confidence to build and offer a service that helps businesses combine technology with retail. I usually write about change and transformation. Today, I am doing the same but a little differently – I am writing about how I have witnessed someone #transform into a #leader right before my eyes. I am talking about Flora.   Presently, Flora is the 𝗛𝗲𝗮𝗱 𝗼𝗳 𝗢𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 at MARG Business Transformation and is also handling all execution responsibilities of the leadership team. Eight years ago, in August, she joined us as an Assistant Business Development Manager. I still remember the girl with the “𝘁𝘄𝗶𝗻𝗸𝗹𝗲” in her eyes across the interview table.   Over this time, she has been one of the few people who have worked in sales, training management, vendor management, corporate functions (HR/Finance), forecasting and planning, and now marketing – practically everything at Marg. She seamlessly assumed her position in the leadership team four years ago. She does everything without creating any noise – her work speaks for itself.   She has been instrumental in guiding Marg through this phenomenal #journey to its current form and shape. I personally cannot imagine a day in the office without her. She has been the strongest support through all ups and downs (trust me, there were many), business challenges, and life surprises. Together, we have done things that sometimes seem like a dream. Her growth as a leader, her persistent approach to getting things done, her warmth towards the team, and her initiative to take on new challenges and prepare for the future have been remarkable. In addition, she has not fallen short in her roles as an incredible mother, wife, and daughter. By the way, she is a fabulous singer, dancer, and foodie, and you will not see her repeat her dress often😃. In one word, she is #amazing, and I could not be luckier to have her with me on this journey.   #Congratulations, Flora, on completing 𝗲𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝘆𝗲𝗮𝗿𝘀 at Marg. Together with the team, we have managed these eight years, six offices, 100 to 1,000 clients, pan-India movement, 10x revenue growth, the entire inception to maturation of Prosci as a brand in India, the pandemic, growth and scale challenges, and the list goes on.   Now it’s no longer about the destination – the journey has been rewarding, and you have emerged as a leader to watch out for. "For Sale: Awards or Integrity? The New Price of Recognition" Recently, I framed some old photos of the first couple of recognitions I received at the beginning of my career. It was a different time — I began as part of the team that initiated operations for PepsiCo Restaurants International, launching QSR operations for Pizza Hut and KFC in India. Those awards in the photos reminded me of the real hustle, teamwork, and the sheer hard work that went into earning each recognition. Back then, I served tables; now, I serve my clients across the world, and I believe it was that grit, hard work, determination, and dignity of labour that gave me the drive to do what I do today. Contrastingly, the emails flooding my inbox today offer a very different opportunity: the chance to buy awards. This shift forces me to ask: When did we start substituting purchased praise for hard-earned recognition? This trend is alarming, not just because it undermines the true spirit of achievement, but also because of the dangerous precedent it sets for future generations. The notion that success and acknowledgment can be bought cheapens the value of genuine effort and could potentially breed a culture where true merit is overshadowed by the ability to pay. It threatens to erode the foundational values of integrity and sincerity that define great leaders and organizations. What does this mean for the future? If we continue on this path, we risk cultivating a work culture that values appearance over substance, shortcuts over genuine paths to success.
