Habitat Forum (INHAF) invites you for a webinar on Child and City: Are, Cities as they Grow and Develop, Fair to Children? on 22nd August 2024 at 6 PM IST. INHAF's webinar series explores cities from various perspectives like low-cost housing, water supply, and energy. The upcoming webinar will focus on evaluating cities through the lens of children's rights. Beginning with Eglantyne Jebb’s activism in 1919, the child rights movement culminated in the UNCRC in 1989. India ratified the convention in 1992 and parallelly formulated policies like the Juvenile Justice Act and RTE Act in alignment with UNCRC principles. Despite significant strides like the establishment of ChildLine, challenges persist, with urbanization impacting children negatively. Cities lack child-friendly infrastructure, posing risks. It's imperative to prioritize children, involving citizens in planning for a better future. It's time to act with empathy and expertise to ensure a safer, more inclusive environment for children. World Children's Day is celebrated on November 20th to mark the adoption of two important documents by the United Nations: The Declaration of the Rights of the Child (1959) The Convention on the Rights of the Child (1989) The day focuses on advocating, promoting, and celebrating children's rights, which lead to dialogues and actions that build a better world for children. The day emphasizes the importance of listening to children's voices, understanding their ideas for a better world, and including their priorities in actions today. It also highlights the challenges children face, such as poverty, lack of education, and healthcare, and calls for global commitment to protect and support children's rights. In essence, the day serves as a reminder of the importance of fostering an environment where every child can grow, learn, and thrive in safety and happiness. #WorldChildrensDay #ProtectChildrensRights #ForEveryChildEveryRight #4ABetterWorld

Eurochild has been following the hearing of Commissioner-designate Glenn Micallef on Intergenerational Fairness, Youth, Culture, and Sport. Micallef emphasised the need for policies created with and for #youngpeople and his dedication to a first-ever Strategy on Intergenerational Fairness is a promising step towards promoting this principle. We welcome Micallef's commitment to the Strategy on the Rights of the Child and his action plan on cyberbullying aims to ensure that all #children feel safe, supported, and empowered. He also reaffirmed that #childpoverty must be tackled collectively, working with Roxana Minzatu, Executive Vice-President -designate for People, Skills and Preparedness, to strengthen the #ChildGuarantee. Ensuring #childsafetyonline and #mentalhealth is a priority in Micallef’s portfolio. He will support a new inquiry into social media's impact on well-being, alongside the cyberbullying action plan. What we would like to hear more about: 🔸#Inclusion of vulnerable children in participation processes. 🔸Concrete steps to integrate #childrights impact assessments into decision-making. 🔸Insights on how children’s rights will feature in #intergenerationalfairness policies. 🔸Addressing #inequalities in education, mental health, and children’s right to a safe, sustainable environment. Eurochild is eager to share our members’ knowledge and the lived experiences of children, working closely with the European Commission to turn these commitments into real, impactful actions that protect, respect, and promote the rights of every child.

Current crisis response interventions appear ineffective at mitigating the damaging impacts on children. Policy which campaigns for child participation rights requires reform to better actualise children’s participatory rights. http://ow.ly/S4Wk30sHEMG

January 10, 2024: Hays County Judge- Denies my Petition for Adoption of 4 sibling brothers, from being adopted together; siding with DFPS recommendation to allow the children to continue in their separate placements and be adopted in separate homes, despite: 1) CPS naming me the adoptive placement for 2 of the 4 siblings ( in 2 out of the 5 days of the biological mother's termination trial) , and 2) Despite my using the judicial system and paying over $60K + in attorney fees in order to get my foster sons placed back into my home and adopted, along with their 2 little brothers; after parents rights were terminated; 3) Despite my foster sons repeated claims of wanting to be adopted by me and wanting to return to my home; 4) Despite CASA and CPS reports submitted to the court in December 2023 that show that the 4 sibling brothers' emotional and mental condition continue to worsen in the State's Care, in separate adoptive homes; not permitting them to be returned to my home). 5) Despite CPS testifying, in my adoption hearing, that they did not have a "good reason" for withholding consent of adopting the 4 brothers. On January 13, 2023; DFPS partnered with my foster care agency to close my home citing, "due to DFPS concerns that I violated client confidentiality"; I was not provided with specific information about what that was, nor was I given any information on how to resolve any future incidents and was not provided with information on how I could appeal the decision. I have not been able to get licensed to adopt in Texas due to the foster care agency stating in their transfer paperwork that "they do not recommend my home for future placement". DFPS' strategy was to make sure I did not have a license to foster/adopt when I was finally able to get my adoption hearing before the judge. They succeeded. #UniversalChildrenDay The Young Lives study highlights the urgent need for governments to strengthen efforts in realizing children’s civil rights to information, expression, participation, and association. This means breaking down barriers that hinder children’s voices in decision-making and fostering supportive environments for child-led initiatives like clubs, organizations, and parliaments. Inclusion is key—every child, regardless of age, gender, ability, ethnicity, religion, language, or migration status, deserves the opportunity to shape decisions that impact their lives. Let’s champion children’s rights and build a more equitable future. #YoungLivesStudy #ChildRights #InclusionMatters #Foreverychildeveryright Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office Young Lives - An International Study of Childhood Poverty Read Young Lives, Policy Brief - https://loom.ly/AyBhno0

Too often, policy operates from the top-down, with the voices of professional researchers weighed over the voices of the youth, families, and communities being served. As we commit to embracing public services that promote a positive cultural identity and are responsive to the diversity of families in the community, we must adopt a different approach grounded in respecting community voice. The people who are supposed to benefit from services are the best judges of what works for them, and their perspectives should be central to determining what counts as evidence that a program is valuable and is meeting their expressed needs. Policymakers should embrace this community-defined evidence and work collaboratively to integrate community-defined evidence into program evaluation. #UniversalChildrensDay The Young Lives Ethiopia underscores the importance of empowering children to actively participate in shaping their futures. This vision aligns with our initiatives ISG Ethiopia, which work tirelessly to create safe, inclusive spaces where children, regardless of their backgrounds, can thrive. Through community-driven efforts, ISG Ethiopia provides access to education, mentorship, and support networks for children affected by poverty, displacement, and social barriers. By championing children’s civil rights to expression, participation, and association, programs like these are paving the way for a generation of confident, capable leaders. Inclusion isn’t just a principle, it’s a promise to every child. Together, we can break down barriers and ensure every child’s voice is heard. Let’s keep working for a future where every child has the opportunity to shape the decisions that affect their lives. #YoungLivesStudy #ChildRights #InclusionMatters #ForeveryChildEveryRight #ISGEthiopia
