Beacon Partnership provide affordable housing practitioners an opportunity to enhance their skill set by running a number of free online training sessions each year. Steve Beard, founding partner at Beacon, is delivering our popular free training session on how viability works for rented social housing on the 4th December at 10am. In the 2 hour Teams session Steve will build an excel viability model from scratch, attendees will learn how a model is formed and how affordable housing and grant providers typically look at viability. There is an opportunity during the session to review and test inputs and look at viability modelling in our current market and what would need to change to increase activity. The session will be of particular interest to anyone interested in how viability works and also how excel works. At the end of the session attendees can get a free copy of the model that is built in the session to perform rented viability modelling afterwards. Chartered Institute of Housing (CIH) Canada Designation – is this right for me or for someone in my organization? We have a Level 3 Certificate Program happening in the new year, with an application closing date of January 20th, 2025. Who would be interested in these skills? - Social and community housing providers. - Not-for-profit organizations that are looking to develop housing to suit the needs of people in their communities. - Government organizations that want to develop strategic planning with respect to housing. What is the value of a CIH Designation? - In the UK, CIH Level 3 Certificate in Housing Services would be comparable to a college or CEGEP program. In Canada, it is estimated that three million households need deeply affordable housing supply and an additional 1.4 million need affordable housing supply (Whitzman, 2024). Although by no means exhaustive, the following identifies some of the key advantages social housing managers may gain from CPD participation: Maintain standards Along with the necessary basic qualifications equivalent to a Level 4 housing management diploma, social housing managers will benefit greatly from an ongoing commitment to CPD. As explained within the Social Housing (Regulations) Bill 2023, requirements for social housing managers are liable to change on a regular basis. CPD courses are often affordable, or even free, offering learners a chance to develop their skills and knowledge without overextending their budget. CPD learning can also offer flexibility. This could be engaging with learning methods such as online #courses, but #CPD also emphasises the importance of reflective #learning such as reading relevant books or watching #educational videos.
