Once upon a time, the community sector was driven by local organisations deeply rooted in their neighbourhoods. These grassroots organisations were flexible, agile and able to respond effectively to community needs because they had built long-term trust and demonstrated a genuine commitment to fostering social capital. In the 2000s, Governments shifted to competitive funding models that favoured large charities with financial and capital resources far beyond what these grassroots organisations could achieve. Not only did this eradicate many of the smaller entities, it also diminished the importance of community development as a vital strategy for addressing persistent social disadvantage. As a direct result, we now have a a sector filled with thousands of charities with billions of dollars of investment and the same unresolved issues. The real solutions lie within the communities themselves. Community members are the true experts in their lives and their insights are essential for shaping effective programs. This announcement could be a step in the right direction only if there is an intent to resource local communities by equipping them with the capabilities to establish community-driven organisations. Otherwise this will be another uninformed quick fix policy instead of a meaningful solution. #CommunityDevelopment #SocialImpact #Empowerment #GrassrootsSolutions #SocialChange #Solutions #Community #CommunityLed #SystemicChange #PLACE #DSS https://lnkd.in/gyMhXaE7

"When unmet needs arise in a community, there's a high chance that somewhere else in the country, an existing nonprofit is successfully tackling that very challenge." Establishing an organization requires a significant investment of time, energy, funding, and manpower. It's essential to scale effective nonprofits rather than starting new organizations. I’ve enjoyed thoroughly in being involved in or reading reports of baseline studies done by the international non-governmental organisations that I have worked for. Surveying the community and piloting programs before launching them officially had helped the team address social issues more effectively. The challenge lies more in showcasing to stakeholders how successful organizations are addressing issues, providing an accurate understanding of unique community needs, and offering sound recommendations. @Alliance Magazine GreenLight Fund #CommunitySurvey #nonprofit #SocialImpact #PolicyResearch #research

🌟 Funders, it’s time to rethink the approach to supporting nonprofits! 🌟 The success of any nonprofit organization goes beyond financial resources. Yet, so often, we see the blame falling on nonprofits when projects don’t meet expectations. This article from IDR Online highlights the importance of equitable collaboration between funders and nonprofits, urging us all to reflect on the complexities nonprofits face and how funders can provide more thoughtful, long-term support. 🤝 Let’s move away from blame and work towards real impact together. 💡 #Philanthropy #Nonprofits #Collaboration #Impact #SustainableSupport #SocialChange

Domestic and intimate partner violence affects us all - whether you see it or not. Even at a day-to-day business level, countries around the world have even started instituting protected employee leave for victims. Canada could easily be next. However... “Increasingly, philanthropy is used as a form of public relations or advertising, promoting a company’s image or brand through cause-related marketing in high-profile sponsorships.” - Harvard Business Review So where does that leave #supportlocal and connecting with your own people? Whether you're interested in sponsoring events such as our upcoming 𝐒𝐩𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐒𝐢𝐥𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐀𝐮𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 or 𝐁𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐥𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐀𝐰𝐚𝐫𝐝𝐬, corporate volunteering opportunities, monthly support initiatives, charitable partnerships, or even personal involvement, connecting with community-level organizations can have big benefits for everyone. https://lnkd.in/g357cm65

This week 1000+ Australian social change advocates in the philanthropy and not-for-profit sector meet in Adelaide for the 11th Philanthropy Australia conference with the collective goal of doubling giving by 2030. Here are a few quotes from the opening addresses, where all agree we need more Australians to give, not just the 1%: "Tax data shows Australians are giving more overall but fewer Australians are donating". "Families are moving from one rental property to another, so there's less opportunity to put down roots in their community - less likely to engage deeply with the institutions in their neighbourhood." "It's easier to doom scroll than to engage actively in society." "There are things that preserve society - helping people to feel they have a place to belong, a contribution to make and a story to be heard." -The Hon Peter Malinauskas MP, Premier of South Australia "Philanthropy is an outcome of wealth and privilege - it's a vital component of a strong democracy and a crucial force for social good. But it should not be about the 1%." -Philanthropy Australia CEO, Maree Sidey "Like great music, philanthropy has the power to uplift and transcend, inspire and delight. Philanthropy is a special kind of symphony - a symphony of impact. The strings play the melody of social services, the woodwinds add the harmonies of environmental effects, powerful brass notes of education support, percussion rhythm of arts and culture." "Government committed to double giving by 2030, collaboration between four actors: government, business, philanthropy and the non-profit sector. It's a shared objective." -The Hon Dr Andrew Leigh MP, Assistant Minister for Competition, Charities, Treasury and Employment
