I find it interesting that so many people assume that GDPR (and maybe a few U.S. state laws) are the only data protection laws that need to be considered when potentially processing international personal data. Well, actually... Did you know that 82% of countries worldwide have data protection laws either in place (78%) or in draft (4%)? Data plays a critical role in today's business landscape. Currently in Vietnam, there is a decree for personal data protection and other developing laws, but nonpersonal data laws have been governed by a variety of fragmented legislation. A comprehensive legal framework will be necessary moving forward, which the government has been working to draft. The Law on Data draft, if adopted, aims to strengthen data protection and privacy standards while encouraging the growth of products and services. It will become the primary legal instrument governing data within Vietnam by superseding other laws.
