After some time to process, I wanted to share some thoughts on the fantastic Regenerative Food Systems Investment Event in Brussel end of February. It is not often that conferences hit the mark of being the perfect blend of information, networking, tangible outcomes and momentum building - this one did! A couple of reflections on Regenerative Agriculture: - It is shocking how little I (and possible most of us) know of and think about large scale food systems on a daily basis. There is a deep lack of understanding and appreciation of where the things that feed us are coming from and who is all involved. - Our current system of synthetic fertilizers, herbicides and pesticides is obviously broken and soils would be considered a 'degrading asset' by any long term investor. Restoring it makes plain good sense. - RegenAg is a crucial and feasible approach to transform our current industrial agriculture into a more sustainable process at scale. - 'Regeneration' is a process (in fact the process of life) that takes time and we must provide the right boundary conditions for nature to perform its magic. The results can be stunning and are repeatable. - Food production are a huge contributor to our GHG emissions. But luckily soil can be one of the largest, fast acting and most durable CO2 sinks. We cannot ignore this as a primary path for climate action (SDG13). - RegenAg has now passed the phase of POC and needs to get ouf of the niche and into the widely adopted main stream. While there is an amazing core group of leaders in place, we need to add more traction now. Key insight: RegenAg is not only about different farming techniques, but it requires to redefine the entire supply chain from inputs such as seeds to regenerative farming methods to sorting & milling to selling to food processors to marketing the final product in the supermarkets at the right price. All of this needs to be re-envisioned. It is broader and more complex than shifting from fuel-based to EV cars but this time with hundreds of thousands of different stakeholders. Let's get to it! Red Rocks Impact is currently building an investment thesis around RegenAg and considering this area strongly in our next phase of investments. Thank you Koen van Seijen for connecting me with lots of great people. Thanks you Paul McMahon of SLM Partners for having me in Brussells. #regenag #rfsi #impact #sdg13
