🏆 Creativity is thriving in sports thanks to advanced technologies and materials that enhance performance. Today, I was glued to coverage of the Ironman World Championships in Kona.  So inspiring! The synergy of science, innovation, and technology is allowing athletes to push the boundaries of performance through aerodynamics, cooling tech, nutrition, and performance monitoring—enabling them to achieve every marginal gain on their journey to peak performance. Like someone from another planet tearing up the racecourse Kiwi pro athletes Braden Currie, Ben Hamilton, and Mike Phillips competed. Interestingly, Mike served as a Formthotics Ambassador when Foot Science International (FSI) launched its Cycling Formthotics Medical by Foot Science International a decade ago. During my recent visit to FSI in Christchurch, I learned about their mission to design and manufacture products that alleviate lower back and limb pain while preventing injuries and enhancing comfort. With 42 years of R&D and exports to 50 markets, and a team of 25 punching above their weight in terms of output. David Boyd’s masterful succession plan has paved the way for Shane Heenan to step in as CEO, reflecting David’s strong leadership and vision. It was great to chat to Shane about FSI's ambitious growth plans which have been supported by #SIRI (Smart Industry Readiness Index), driving internal change and lean operations. Always looking for better, the team have upskilled the team and redesigned their manufacturing process with a focus on lean. And in keeping with the Ironman theme,  kudos also to RAM3D in Tauranga, which annually produces thousands of bike parts in titanium and stainless steel for global bike manufacturers. Their 3D-printed handlebars for Cycling New Zealand's High Performance Programme highlight innovation in track cycling, as well as custom aerobar designs for NZ Ironman and Triathlon NZ. It's great for some OREC sports to be in the Olympics and resulting growing interest. In particular, I think Sport "Speed" Climbing is a super spectator friendly competition. One on one with speed and heights. It has the chance to really increase exposure to more folks and, with it, based on man-made recreation infrastructure (climbing walls) - open climbing to more urban (i.e. higher population density and potential user volume locations). Which, in turn, will get more people climbing in general to support sport, industry, and related causes. Some of my favorite speed climbing events I've attended and watched were at the Tuck Fest at the US National Whitewater Center outside of Charlotte, NC. Their finals are during the live music at night with lighted (glowing) holds over water with no belay. You fall to a big splash (https://lnkd.in/gvntuhsP)! It's quite the spectacle and very worthwhile. https://lnkd.in/e7BqwGxn It's also great to see the paddling, biking, and other OREC type events that maybe aren't "mainstream" team sports, but do have high volume of usage. These activities can always use more public introduction and support to not only create the future competitors, but also create cyclical support for the infrastructure and related OREC industry, and its many causes through progression infrastructure that builds vested consumers and users.

Last weekend, LangLeven’s Founder/ managing partner Annick-Isabelle Marcoux and General partner Leonard B.C. Schlemm — both accomplished athletes I look up to — competed in a Hyrox Race held in Toronto. 🏆 What’s most impressive isn’t just their winning of the mixed double competition, earning them a spot at the 2025 Worlds championships, but their decision to step outside familiar grounds — and devote resources needed to successfully navigate the unknown. Rather than sticking to disciplines they've mastered like cycling and marathon running, they chose to tackle an event pushing their perceived physical and mental limits in new territories. Their willingness to embrace the unknown is a powerful reminder of how important it is to continually challenge ourselves—regardless of age or experience. The commitment to shock our comfort zone is what keeps us sharp, focused, and healthier for the long run. Excited to share that I’ve signed up for the Women’s Solo Elite category in the #HYROX Open North American Championships, happening March, 2025, in Washington, D.C.! Five months of focused training ahead—not for triumphs, it’s for training my mind to face the challenges and be Resilience and patience, aiming for long-term gratification. Welcome to join my five-month training! What is #HYROX? Known for its unique combination of functional fitness and endurance exercises, set up in a specific format. For the North American Championships, the workout includes eight stations, each preceded by a 1 km run, totaling 8 km of running plus the following exercises for Women’s Elite category: 1. 1,000m Ski Erg – focused on cardio and endurance. 2. Sled Push – 125 kg (275 lbs). This station requires pushing a sled loaded with this weight over a specified distance. 3. Sled Pull – 85 kg (187 lbs). This involves pulling a sled, challenging upper body and core strength. 4. Burpee Broad Jumps – 80m. 5. 1,000m Row 6. Farmer’s Carry – 2 x 24 kg (53 lbs) per hand, testing grip strength, core, and endurance. 7. Sandbag Lunges – 100m, 20 kg (44 lbs) sandbag carried on the shoulders while performing lunges. 8. Wall Balls – 75 reps, 6 kg (13 lbs) medicine ball thrown to a target 9 feet high, combining leg and shoulder strength. This challenging lineup is designed to push physical and mental limits, with heavy weights tailored to test the stamina and strength of elite competitors.

From sprints to distance medleys, the competition was fierce and inspiring. Key highlights include the Girls and Boys 200m Championship Finals, which demonstrated raw speed and precision. The Distance Medley Relays showcased teamwork and strategic pacing, while the hurdles events tested athletesʼ agility and technique. What stood out to me was the inclusion of international events like the Meeting Nikaïa 2024, featuring 800m, 1500m, and 1000m races. This global perspective is crucial for the sportʼs growth and athlete development. 🌍 The live webcasts and video coverage are a game-changer for fan engagement and athlete exposure. In todayʼs digital age, this level of accessibility is vital for the sportʼs popularity and commercial success. As we look to the future of track and field, events like these are pivotal in identifying emerging talents and setting new standards of excellence. It's not every day you get to run the UTMB®, one of the most iconic and competitive ultra trail running races in the world. Last August, I found myself at the starting line in Chamonix, Mont Blanc. Despite putting in a lot of training since the CCC in 2023, I decided to stop at the 125 km mark after fainting, just 5 km before Champex Lac. Up until that point, I was performing well, positioned among the top 200 athletes. The decision to quit was one I pondered deeply. I questioned the importance of finishing the UTMB compared to my broader life objectives. This reflection led me to realize that success requires directing our efforts toward the right goals. My primary aim wasn't just completing the UTMB but getting back into shape and enjoying long, invigorating days in the mountains. The UTMB was a means to this end, helping me achieve my true goal, but was never the goal itself. Comparing the experience with my work made me realize that focusing on the present and delivering the best results for my clients is crucial. However, to truly excel, I must keep steering towards the right objectives, which can change over time. Understanding what my goals are and driving towards them is essential; otherwise, it's easier to take a wrong turn and quit on the first difficulties you encounter. As I move forward, I’m eager to identify and pursue my next set of goals—though I’m not yet sure what they’ll be, I am excited about the journey of discovery. Last but not least, the most surprising thing about the experience (even more than the views), was the people who supported me during the race.
