Embracing sustainability for a greener tomorrow! On this World Environment Day, let's highlight MIFB’s sustainable journey for 2024: 1. Last year, we achieved a milestone by transforming 33KG of food waste into 10KG of nutrient-rich compost through our waste management efforts. 2. We're stepping up our waste reduction initiatives by introducing new methods to effectively recycle food waste generated during the event and materials from the booths. 3. In July 2024, we are aiming to set a new record in collecting food waste. The compost created from this will be generously donated to urban farms in Semenyih and Rawang, supporting their sustainable farming practices. #CitiesFitForPeople: Informal waste collectors are vital in advancing a circular approach to managing organic waste. That's why Practical Action in Kenya and Regen Organics recently facilitated a three-day training on organic waste segregation, handling, and quality control for 147 waste workers in Kakamega Municipality. Among them were 71 women. Through interactive sessions and group discussions, participants gained practical skills and insights into the potential of circular economy techniques to manage household organic waste effectively. "The training was an eye-opener. I now know that by segregating waste, I can turn it into wealth and improve my income," said Lilian Isukha, a member of a waste management group. This initiative is part of the Circular Economy for Household Organic Waste (CE4HOW) Project. Funded by Danida Green Business Partnerships / Danida Market Development Partnerships, it aims to create a viable business model for household organic waste that reduces greenhouse gas emissions, improves waste services, and transforms the lives of informal waste workers. benon wasonga Daniel Mwakha Trizzah Abuya Michael Lwoyelo Elizabeth Asichi

A groundbreaking project in Mukuru, Nairobi, is turning food waste into opportunity - and giving back to farmers and the planet ❤️ In Nairobi’s Mukuru slums, food waste isn’t just a problem, it’s a crisis. Piles of waste block streets, trap water, and release greenhouse gases. But an incredible project is buzzing with change. Using black soldier fly larvae, locals are turning waste into gold: organic fertilizer, animal feed, and a cleaner environment. The best part? This innovation cuts food waste by up to 70%, reduces methane emissions, and gives farmers like Moses Aswani affordable solutions to thrive. 🙌

Join us in reliving a significant milestone at the #Lautoka Market in Fiji, as the market made significant strides towards its #sustainability journey this October with the handover of 20 green wheelie bins for the segregation and collection of organic waste. This initiative, part of the #RecycleOrganics Program funded by Environment and Climate Change Canada, aims to streamline separation at the source, ensuring that organic waste generated by the market’s vendors is composted efficiently to produce nutrient-rich organic fertilizer that then becomes available to the public. ♻️ 🌱 "By providing bins for organic waste separation, we can facilitate the process of producing high quality #compost, making it easier for communities and the Lautoka City Council to manage organic waste. We can raise awareness about #climatechange and #methane mitigation, contributing to a more sustainable future for #Fiji." - Head of Cooperation at the Canadian High Commission, David Fournier. By turning waste into valuable compost and embracing #circularity, the Lautoka Market is not only addressing waste management issues and reducing GHG emissions, but it is also empowering local communities to sustainably grow their own food. It also generates savings for the city in the transportation and final disposal of waste, while educating people on the importance of sustainable waste management practices. 🌿 This handover marks a substantial step towards a greener future for Lautoka and serves as an inspiring example for markets across the region to replicate. 🍃 📝 Read More ➡ https://lnkd.in/d9SEcd9Q ImplementaSur CCAP

WASTE NOT, NOURISH SOIL “In the journey to do good, make sure you’re not doing harm.” This powerful insight comes from Derrick Ngigi, HSC, founder of Pure Plant Organics. Pure Plant Organics are tackling a pressing issue: Nairobi's organic waste. By transforming agricultural waste into organic fertilisers, they not only reduce harmful greenhouse gas emissions like methane and carbon dioxide but also give farmers a powerful tool to improve soil health and cut down on production costs. Through the support of the Circular Economy ClimAccelerator, Derrick has gained crucial insights into the metrics that matter most. It’s no longer just about how much waste he converts, it’s about understanding the entire journey of impact. With the help of industry experts, Derrick has refined his approach to ensure that his efforts to reduce waste are as sustainable as possible. 3 key insights he shares; ✔Measure the true impact: Beyond just the products, understanding the journey of impact helps identify opportunities for improvement in both positive outcomes and reducing potential negative effects. ✔Sustainability is in the details: Little changes like managing electricity and water usage can make a big difference, ensuring that efforts to do good don’t inadvertently harm the environment. ✔Record-keeping is key: From tracking stock levels to scheduling customer follow-ups, meticulous record-keeping enables Pure Plant Organics to stay efficient and responsive to customer needs. This is just the beginning for Derrick and Pure Plant Organics, as they continue to refine their processes and expand their impact in Nairobi’s circular economy. School children and university adults play a crucial role in promoting sustainable palm oil production. By educating themselves about the importance of sustainable #palmoil and raising awareness, they can influence the decisions of their institutions and communities. Advocating for sustainable palm oil policies and supporting companies that use certified sustainable palm oil are practical steps that can be taken. Additionally, engaging in research and development to find alternatives or improve the sustainability of palm oil production is a valuable contribution. Collaborating with organizations that offer educational programs and resources is another way to promote sustainable palm oil. Through these actions, school children and university adults can contribute to the conservation of tropical forests, the protection of endangered species, and the support of sustainable livelihoods for farmers in palm oil-producing regions. #sustainability #sustainablepalmoil #malaysia

Today marks this year's International Day of Awareness of Food Loss and Waste! Reducing food loss and waste is critical to building sustainable food systems. In Lagos, Ecotutu is tackling this challenge head-on by providing solar-powered cooling storage facilities that help small and medium-sized businesses reduce post-harvest losses. Founder and CEO, Babajide Oluwase, shared how gaining access to the Mile 12 International Market—a key horticultural hub—was a game-changer for Ecotutu. With support from the HortiNigeria Program, Ecotutu launched a 10-metric-ton cold storage facility in 2023. This breakthrough is helping sellers preserve produce, minimize losses, and increase profits. 💡🍅🥬 By fostering business linkages across the value chain, we can reduce inefficiencies, prevent food waste, and build a more sustainable future!
