The first of the inaugural BBIA #demeterawards Collaboration Awards presentations is by 2M Group and Xampla. The collaboration builds on a long history of research by Xampla to create novel coatings for the packaging industry. Their natural polymer product, Morro, displace PFAS and plastic liners. Their work with 2M has enabled codevelopment of innovation and supply chains to bring the products to market. Next up is Floreon introducing their collaboration with Morph Bricks Ltd. Their modular system uses circular PLA for applications in the built environment. Thermo-Tech PLA offers fire retardant properties for safe application. Morph Bricks and Florean offer recycling of their products for circularity. My own organisation Biorenewables Development Centre is up next, with Peter Hurst introducing our collaboration with ADAPTAVATE . Adaptavate make a bio-based alternative to gypsum plasterboard that has the potential to sequester 0.5kg CO2eq/m2. This in an annual global market of 13bn m2. Azotic Technologies Ltd. and CPI are next. Azotic's microbial technology for fixing nitrogen in crops will help to reduce the use of nitrogen fertiliser by up to 30%. CPI have enabled Azotic to rapidly scale up manufacturing and accelerate their route to market and make efficientuse of revenue. (They also graciously mentioned the role that BDC played in supporting Azotic during their development.) The ultrasonic technologies of Sonichem is next. Their lignin fractionation process has supplied materials to Scott Bader, Polestar, and SHD Composite Materials under the CARMA collaboration, with support from CPI and National Composites Centre. A whole supply chain approach is helping to put bio-based plastics into automotive applications, targeting lower greenhouse gas emissions and displacement of fossil resources. Croda and Amyris have collaborated to produce squalene from plant-based raw materials through a bioprocess, replacing a 19-step synthetic process that incorporated metal catalysis. Squalene is applied in cosmetics and medicines. The synthetic process was itself an alternative to natural squalene derived from sharks. This reduces land use and emissions. All of the pitches across three different awards have been as inspiring as they are diverse. It has been a real honour for BDC to be nominated amongst those. The winners and nominees are all working hard to realise sustainable technologies.

In 2024, CO2BioClean reached its key objective of opening and operating its pilot plant in the Hőchst Industrial Park in Frankfurt. The plant has been working continuously since last August, producing batch after batch of #PHA using #CO2 as a base feedstock. We have proven that the technology works and this is really a huge milestone, not just for us but for industry as a whole. Just think, we have taken an emission and fermented it into a naturally #biodegradable #polymer. Meanwhile, we have been running tests on the PHA itself, and shown its use in agricultural appliances like tree guards, and are running trials on #packaging and in #cosmetics.   All this is thanks to our great team and to those investors who believed in this mission. In 2025, we want to consolidate, continuously improve the process and extend licensing arrangements for our technology, after the first licence agreed with Asian partners.   We look forward to meeting you in future events, talking to you as an investor or as a potential licence partner.    Positive change is happening rapidly even though we might not always realise it ; so we can be optimistic!   Wishing everyone a Happy 2025! Floreon is a ‘spin-out’ technology company, who originated from the University of Sheffield. Due to their groundbreaking work in the field of bioplastic technology, the Centre for Process Innovation (CPI), a UK-based tech and sustainable materials accelerator, announced that they will be investing GBP 250 million into Floreon, the bioplastics developer. This investment will make a huge difference to the company, as it will enable them to scale-up their technology and drive forwards the development of bioplastics.
