3 Key Points I learned while writing a federal resume this past week: 1. Follow the standard template and make sure to include all required information. Federal resumes are different from traditional resumes/CVs. They aren’t looking for a condensed, one page resume. Your resume should be 2–5 pages in length and include non-standard information such as: - Address  - Citizenship (for specific jobs)  - Veteran’s preference (for specific jobs)  - The number of hours you worked per week  - Employer’s address, phone number, manager, and if they may be contacted  - Volunteer work or community organization roles 2. Track metrics This is true for any type of resume. I’ve just been bad about this throughout my career. I have some numbers on my resume, but when it comes to project performance, I have slacked at gathering the necessary information. Now I realize metrics are what substantiate your claims. They help prove that you have relevant experience beneficial for the role. (I might not be the one tracking click-through rates, views, or sales increase, but I know who are, and I will take initiative to gather that data from now on)   3. Address every required qualification Computers can’t assume you can do the job. Tailor your resume for every position so that you are hitting the key words and required qualifications. Most jobs, including federal, use an a.i. wall to vet resumes before moving them into the interview process. If you don’t have the key words, even if you meet every qualification for the job, your application will never reach the hiring manager. (Being a designer I thought a well designed resume and portfolio proved I could do the job and that I didn’t need to tailor my resume. Two months and 200+ applications later, I realize I’ve been doing it wrong.) ____ Now that I've learned these points for a federal resume, I will be applying these to my standard resume and future job applications.
