How can we navigate the complex interplay between tourism, conservation, and diverse stakeholder values in protected areas like UNESCO Biosphere Reserves? Our newly published research in the Archipelago Sea Biosphere Reserve, Finland dives into this challenge by applying the IPBES Values Typology -intrinsic, instrumental, and relational values - to uncover diverse perspectives on tourism and landscape management. Here are some highlights: ✅ Intrinsic values were most significant for all three studied groups, i.e. locals, recreationst and tourists. ✅ Locals emphasised relational values when describing these in their own words, while recreationists mapped more locations in the landscape linked to relational/instrumental values. ✅ The only purely instrumental value was accessibility. ✅ Stakeholders favored small-scale, sustainable tourism that preserves natural landscapes and local heritage, over large-scale tourism projects. ✅ Our survey included both participatory mapping and open description of landscape values. Both approaches were crucial and complemented each other. ✅ Operationalization of the IPBES Values Typology needed to integrate the vagueness, complexity, and context-dependency of people-nature relationships in the ABR. 🌟 Takeaway: Sustainable tourism can foster economic growth, conserve biodiversity, and strengthen community resilience - when stakeholder values are at the heart of the planning process. The challenge remains to translate diverse values into actionable policies. 🎉 Big thanks to everyone who contributed to this work! Liliana Solé Figueras Alex Lechner, Kyle Hearn and Witra Tahjudil Thank you also for the great collaboration Archipelago Sea Biosphere Reserve and Metsähallitus! 📖 Read more in the article published in Ambio: https://lnkd.in/dABguNms Report in Finnish available at: https://lnkd.in/dkGADRh6 #IPBES #LandscapeValues #Tourism #Conservation #Biodiversity #HumanNatureConnection #UNESCO #BiosphereReserve #PPGIS

With the summer beach season approaching, WESSA and V&A Waterfront will host the #BlueFlag and #GreenCoast Awards, celebrating coastal leaders driving sustainable tourism and environmental management. This recognition goes beyond accolades—it reflects South Africa’s commitment to safeguarding its natural biodiversity and heritage. As climate change and pollution pressures intensify, these awards serve as a critical reminder: sustainable tourism and community-led conservation are not optional—they are imperative. WESSA, in partnership with @foundationforenvironmentaleducation (FEE), continues to set the benchmark for beaches, marinas, and eco-tourism boat operators, urging all stakeholders to align their efforts to the 33 Blue Flag criteria and sustainable development goals. The Blue Flag and Green Coast programmes demonstrate that collaboration between communities, municipalities, and tourism boat operators can build resilient coastal ecosystems while delivering economic value. The message is clear—our future depends on a unified approach to sustainability. The journey toward sustainable coastal management doesn’t end with these awards—it begins here. Let’s use this moment to champion climate-conscious tourism and reinforce the role of every stakeholder in caring for our coastal spaces for future generations. You don’t have to go far in #Queensland to find a stunning natural environment. With a renewed focus on #ecotourism our team are working with stakeholders to create more world-class ecotourism experiences on our doorstep. So, what is Ecotourism? 🔍 - The International Ecotourism Society states that ecotourism is built on a foundation of Conservation, Communities and Interpretation. Conservation 🦋 Offering market-linked long-term solutions, ecotourism provides effective economic incentives for conserving and enhancing bio-cultural diversity and helps protect the natural and cultural heritage of our beautiful planet. Communities 🚵 By increasing local capacity building and employment opportunities, ecotourism is an effective vehicle for empowering local communities around the world to fight against poverty and to achieve sustainable development. Interpretation 🌱 With an emphasis on enriching personal experiences and environmental awareness through interpretation, ecotourism promotes greater understanding and appreciation for nature, local society, and culture. We are proud to play a part in the future of ecotourism in our region. ☺️ Townsville Enterprise (TEL) Townsville Chamber of Commerce Nirrwara Global Tourism and Events Queensland BDmagAU #ecotourism #conservation #environment #queensland #sustainability

Happy #WorldTourismDay! Sustainable tourism is a powerful tool for fostering cultural understanding and building bridges between people from diverse backgrounds, contributing to peace and cooperation globally. 🪸 A perfect example of this is the role coral reefs play in tourism. These vital ecosystems not only captivate millions of visitors but also provide essential economic support. Tourism linked to coral reefs promotes environmental awareness and helps fund conservation efforts that protect these fragile ecosystems. Fiji’s BULA Reef, an initiative led by Corals for Conservation (C4C) and endorsed by the #OceanDecade, demonstrates how sustainable tourism can be a force for good. BULA Reef is the largest rescue reef of its kind in history, made up of over a thousand heat-adapted “super corals”, taken from areas of extreme heat stress where the corals were in danger of dying. It not only protects marine biodiversity but also empowers local communities by creating jobs and enhancing their role as environmental stewards: https://lnkd.in/eAPtcwQm Celebrate World Tourism Day by exploring responsibly, supporting conservation, and deepening your connection to our shared planet. 🌏💙 #TourismForPeace #WTD2024

B&B Parco Alta Murgia is proud to announce its participation in the First Mile project, a prestigious two-year initiative aimed at promoting Sustainable Tourism. This participation is particularly significant as B&B Parco Alta Murgia is the only establishment in Southern Italy selected to take part in this innovative project. The First Mile project adopts a behavioral science approach, encouraging tourists to make conscious choices that respect and preserve the environment. As a pioneer in the project's development, B&B Parco Alta Murgia is committed to implementing innovative and sustainable solutions. Two creative activities have already been successfully realized: 💧the installation of Ollas in its organic garden, an irrigation technique that reduces water consumption by up to 70% 🗺 the creation of an innovative pedestrian map. This map guides visitors toward the use of public transportation, significantly minimizing the environmental impact of tourist travel. These initiatives represent just the beginning of B&B Parco Alta Murgia's contribution to the First Mile project, with the hope of creating a replicable model of sustainable tourism. #EUfunded #firstmileproject #sustainability #behavioralScience #sustainableTravel #innovation #greenTourism #puglia #aitr
