With the summer beach season approaching, WESSA and V&A Waterfront will host the #BlueFlag and #GreenCoast Awards, celebrating coastal leaders driving sustainable tourism and environmental management. This recognition goes beyond accolades—it reflects South Africa’s commitment to safeguarding its natural biodiversity and heritage. As climate change and pollution pressures intensify, these awards serve as a critical reminder: sustainable tourism and community-led conservation are not optional—they are imperative. WESSA, in partnership with @foundationforenvironmentaleducation (FEE), continues to set the benchmark for beaches, marinas, and eco-tourism boat operators, urging all stakeholders to align their efforts to the 33 Blue Flag criteria and sustainable development goals. The Blue Flag and Green Coast programmes demonstrate that collaboration between communities, municipalities, and tourism boat operators can build resilient coastal ecosystems while delivering economic value. The message is clear—our future depends on a unified approach to sustainability. The journey toward sustainable coastal management doesn’t end with these awards—it begins here. Let’s use this moment to champion climate-conscious tourism and reinforce the role of every stakeholder in caring for our coastal spaces for future generations. Happy #WorldTourismDay! Sustainable tourism is a powerful tool for fostering cultural understanding and building bridges between people from diverse backgrounds, contributing to peace and cooperation globally. 🪸 A perfect example of this is the role coral reefs play in tourism. These vital ecosystems not only captivate millions of visitors but also provide essential economic support. Tourism linked to coral reefs promotes environmental awareness and helps fund conservation efforts that protect these fragile ecosystems. Fiji’s BULA Reef, an initiative led by Corals for Conservation (C4C) and endorsed by the #OceanDecade, demonstrates how sustainable tourism can be a force for good. BULA Reef is the largest rescue reef of its kind in history, made up of over a thousand heat-adapted “super corals”, taken from areas of extreme heat stress where the corals were in danger of dying. It not only protects marine biodiversity but also empowers local communities by creating jobs and enhancing their role as environmental stewards: https://lnkd.in/eAPtcwQm Celebrate World Tourism Day by exploring responsibly, supporting conservation, and deepening your connection to our shared planet. 🌏💙 #TourismForPeace #WTD2024

Often described as the "last frontier," Antarctica is becoming a more and more well-liked destination for daring tourists looking for unspoiled scenery and unusual animals. A large number of arguments are being forwarded to support the ever increasing tourism activities here such as an increase in employment generation in tourism and support services; revenue generation which would be used to conserve and protect the pristine ecosystem; enhanced awareness about environment conservation and so on. However a deeper scrutiny of the facts and arguments presents before us worrisome questions- 1. There are no permanent inhabitants or indigenous people residing in Antarctica; Only Research professionals and support staff stay there for limited intervals- So who are to benefit from these commercial tourism activities? 2. Example of pollution, coral bleaching events at The Great Barrier Reef, Australia, Environmental degradation and Pollution at Mount Everest, Nepal etc. brings a picture of impact of Mass tourism at such eco sensitive spaces. Can more tourism activity increases respect and advocacy for environment? 3. The Ethical dilemma before the tour operators between providing unique experiences and ensuring minimal impact on the environment. 4. As According to Antarctica Treaty any new claims of sovereignty is prohibited implying that no country can assert ownership over any part of the continent. In this scenario, Who will be held accountable in case any irreparable damage has been done to the Antarctica, its Geology, its ecosystem and so on, ? It may create the issue of 'Tragedy of COMMONS' A wide stakeholder approach is a need for finding the possible solutions. Apart from it, leveraging technology in terms of 3D tours, simulation studies of impact of tourism, more research and limited quota system for tourists such as those in Galapagos Islands, Tourism Tax in Venice etc. can be explored. Strict implementation of the Madrid Protocol, including tougher guidelines and inclusion of more aspects of conservation along with Sustainable tourism practices can a long way in showing our gratitude to the Nature. Please feel free to contribute your ideas or personal stories about environmentally friendly travel in Antarctica! Let's keep talking about how to safeguard this amazing continent. #EnvironmentalProtection #SustainableTourism #TravelEthics

B&B Parco Alta Murgia is proud to announce its participation in the First Mile project, a prestigious two-year initiative aimed at promoting Sustainable Tourism. This participation is particularly significant as B&B Parco Alta Murgia is the only establishment in Southern Italy selected to take part in this innovative project. The First Mile project adopts a behavioral science approach, encouraging tourists to make conscious choices that respect and preserve the environment. As a pioneer in the project's development, B&B Parco Alta Murgia is committed to implementing innovative and sustainable solutions. Two creative activities have already been successfully realized: 💧the installation of Ollas in its organic garden, an irrigation technique that reduces water consumption by up to 70% 🗺 the creation of an innovative pedestrian map. This map guides visitors toward the use of public transportation, significantly minimizing the environmental impact of tourist travel. These initiatives represent just the beginning of B&B Parco Alta Murgia's contribution to the First Mile project, with the hope of creating a replicable model of sustainable tourism. #EUfunded #firstmileproject #sustainability #behavioralScience #sustainableTravel #innovation #greenTourism #puglia #aitr
