Last year Next Gen Men started a new reconciliation practice. It was inspired by a trip to Australia and experiencing land acknowledgements in a new culture and context. Land acknowledgements, or acknowledgement of country as they call it down-under, are important but alone they can become check-box activities. This is something we never want. We want to make sure that when we make a statement, we can authentically build a connection to further actions and learnings. So we came up with the idea of making sure that the time we spend doing an acknowledgement be reflective of our investment into reconciliation. We started tallying all of our earned revenue engagements (i.e. someone is paying for NGM to conduct a session or take part in one) where there was a land acknowledgement on a quarterly basis. A land acknowledgement may take 1 minute. So for all of those sessions we donate 1% of our revenues to an Indigenous organization. Since implementing this practice we've been able to support amazing organizations like Indian Residential School Survivors Society, True North Aid, and Indigenous Climate Action. All organizations are nominated by the NGM team and we share what we've learned about their work with one another. I share this in the spirit of hopefully inspiring others to move beyond just land acknowledgements towards restoration, partnership, and healing. 🧡

With Alberta Ecotrust's Springboard Grant, the Oldman Watershed Council (OWC) will build a Fund Development Plan to launch the next phase of its future success, increasing OWC’s donor base and enhancing investments in essential programs. MoDNR has awarded $62,500 in grant money to evaluate the feasibility of a regional sewer connection between East Newton High School and the City of Granby’s wastewater system. The Lester Centre of the Arts has undergone a critical structural upgrade, helping ensure the long-term survival of the municipally-owned landmark. The Prince Rupert Port Authority's (PRPA) Community Investment Fund collaborated with the City of Prince Rupert to fund and install new metal roofing, gutters, drains and flashing. This is the latest in a series of improvement projects supported by PRPA to revitalize this key City and community asset from top to bottom. PRPA committed over $317,540 to the roof replacement, bringing PRPA's total contributions towards upgrading the Lester Centre to more than $1 million.  Learn more at: https://lnkd.in/gpRuPfez
