The UK construction industry is crucial for our infrastructure and economy but also a significant source of carbon emissions. The Infrastructure Carbon Review (2013) highlights that infrastructure accounts for half of the UK's greenhouse gas emissions. The Five Client Carbon Commitments, part of the CO2nstruct Zero initiative by the Construction Leadership Council, engage clients in reducing carbon emissions with clear timelines. Discover more about the response and how our business can help in the link in the comment 🌱 👇 #Sustainability #Construction #CO2nstructZero #HyperionRobotics #UKConstruction

The Scottish Government has published its consultation on proposed changes to energy and environmental standards for building regulations in Scotland, also know as the Scottish equivalent to the Passivhaus standard. This is the first of two consultations on new rules to improve the energy and environmental performance of new buildings, with this phase seeking views on the technical, commercial and policy implications of the proposed changes. But do they go far enough? Our own Mike Stevenson believes the proposals ignore the “elephant in the room” of embodied carbon produced during construction. What do you think? You can read and respond to the consultation here: https://lnkd.in/dsGzBE45 #EmbodiedCarbon #NetZero #BuildingStandards

Highways UK Live – The Journey to Net Zero and Resilience National Highways has adopted clear net zero targets: its own operations will be carbon free by 2030; those of contractors on its roads by 2040; and of road users by 2050. The challenge will be meeting those goals, while also fulfilling its mission of getting drivers where they need to go, safely and efficiently. The key to meeting this challenge is the carbon reduction hierarchy: avoid, switch, and improve. National Highways has set annual carbon reduction targets for its suppliers. By making use of the carbon reduction hierarchy, these suppliers can ensure that they are able to meet these annual targets. The fear for these suppliers—and others in construction and engineering—will be that the push for decarbonisation will hamper their commercial sustainability. But, our guests explain, the same reductions in materials, for example, that support decarbonisation, can also cut costs. Major clients sign up to CLC’s Client Carbon Commitments. Six major infrastructure clients have pledged to switch to lowest carbon-sourced concrete and steel on their projects. The Lower Thames Crossing, National Highways, Heathrow, Anglian Water Services, NWG (Northumbrian Water Group) and Sellafield Ltd have all committed to procure for low carbon construction and scale-back or phase out the use of diesel, steel, and concrete, which are the biggest carbon emitters on infrastructure construction projects. They are the first clients to sign up for the Construction Leadership Council’s “Five Client Carbon Commitments” designed to help the industry advance to Net Zero. CLC’s five Client Carbon Commitments are: - Procure for low carbon construction and provide incentives in contracts. - Set phase-out dates for fossil fuel use. - Eliminate the most carbon-intensive concrete products. - Eliminate the most carbon-intensive steel products. - Sign up to PAS 2080, allowing a common standard in carbon management and reporting. The five pledges also include setting dates to ban diesel on sites, driving the transition to green hydrogen, and electric-powered plant... Why do we focus so much on buildings in our work at the Regulatory Assistance Project (RAP)? Here's why: The new Global Alliance for Buildings and Construction (GlobalABC) / UN Environment Programme report was launched this week. It shows: 1⃣buildings operation & construction make up 37% of total global CO2 emissions 2⃣we're way off track to decarbonise them

This is the new EU Directive on energy performance for buildings with the goal of decarbonize the building stock (New Construction and Existing) by 2050. The Directive is mandatory but allows governments to decide on the renovation measures best-suited to their specific national context (historic buildings can be exempt). https://lnkd.in/gmSYHEWG

This week, we welcomed Infrastructure Victoria's advice on ‘Opportunities to reduce greenhouse gas emissions of infrastructure’ as a significant milestone towards accounting for, and reducing, greenhouse gas emissions in #infrastructure delivery. As a longstanding advocate for sensible reform, it is pleasing to see our #advocacy for using a ‘carbon base case’ as a key metric in major project decisions adopted. This includes what should be built, how this can be done, and who delivers it. Right now, when governments decide where to allocate hundreds of billions of dollars taxpayers’ money to infrastructure programmes, they are flying blind on #carbon. Infrastructure Victoria’s recommendations have the capacity to limit emissions over the life cycle of a project and save infrastructure providers potentially billions of dollars in capital costs – particularly by creating the right incentives to use less of the highest emitting materials like concrete and steel. #decarbonisation #emissionsreduction

🌍 The UK needs to take immediate action to stay on track for net zero by 2050. ❓ But what should it tackle first? 🗓️ Join the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) debate on 21 March to help us identify the day 1 infrastructure priorities for the next UK parliament. 1️⃣ With a general election incoming, whoever leads the next government will have to make some bold decisions. These 'day 1' decisions can set the stage for lasting change. 👇 Sign up here: https://lnkd.in/dpDVa6ut #NetZero #CivilEngineering

#BUILDINDGS_Decarbonization #USA_Plan_2050 This month has been realesed DOE’s plan for a -90% (2005 reference) Carbon footprint Now, • can it be achieve? • what have to change in the construction industry? • who will implement such “new” approach? • where will start , counties, states, federal? • how much will cost? Who will be able to invest? • Does matter to the incumbents? Well, the document is over the table , now: 1. Read it 2. Evaluate it 3. Follow or 4. 🌍 Maria Manidaki, our Technical Director for Decarbonisation, and 💧 David Riley, head of Carbon Neutrality at Anglian Water, have recently shared insights in an interview about the adoption of PAS2080. 🔀 "We have to look at it within the context of the wider system, ⛓️ aligning the value chains and 🤝 collaborating as clients, designers, contractors and suppliers in that context. 🌍 🌍 That is what PAS 2080 is a framework for.” 👇 Take a moment to explore their discussion!

🔊"A white paper on delivering world-leading standards for buildings should be an urgent step for the next government if we are to stick to the commitments we signed into law during the last parliament – and ensure the UK’s built environment can decarbonise by 2050." 📄 To ensure homeowners are moving to #lowcarbon heat sources, new public funding for stand-alone #fossilfuel heating, such as gas or oil boilers, will be prohibited in the EU from 2025. Writing for Inside Housing, BRE Chief Marketing Officer & Deputy CEO Jane Goddard discusses what these changes to the EU’s Energy Performance of Buildings Directive mean for UK #housing.
