The esteemed speaker, Mr. Raja Naeem Akbar, Hilal-e-Imtiaz, Federal Secretary of the Ministry of Law and Justice in Pakistan, provided invaluable insights into the pivotal role of the Singapore Mediation Convention in international dispute resolution. He shed light on its implications, benefits, and the future of mediation in a global context, with a special focus on what this means for Pakistan and the region. The session emphasized the growing need for mediation in Pakistan to address complex disputes efficiently and effectively. Last week, ALAIDAROUS had the pleasure of hosting an engaging and insightful discussion on Mediation, organized by the CIArb UAE Branch. The event featured an introduction and keynote address by CIArb UAE Branch Chair, Robert Sliwinski and the panel included Wolf von Kumberg of Arbitra International, Haitham Mokhtar Abdelaty, and Hashem AlAidarous, with Sean Yates of Outer Temple Chambers, serving as the moderator. The conversation delved deep into several critical aspects of mediation. The panel explored how mediation fits into the broader ADR landscape, the vital roles that lawyers and experts play in the mediation process, and the key criteria for choosing the right mediator. The significance of institutions and mediation rules was highlighted, particularly in the context of the UAE’s legal landscape, also covering DIAC and ADGM rules. Additionally, the panel discussed the salient points of UAE Mediation Law and examined recent trends in UAE courts, specifically whether pre-conditions to ADR are viewed as matters of jurisdiction or admissibility. SIMC recently concluded a unique 16-week Mentorship Program for Sri Lanka, as a part of its year-long mediator accreditation program to enhance mediation skills in the region. The mentorship program featured a total of 96 sessions, spread out in four major blocks for learning about laying a strong foundation for mediation, facilitating negotiations, generating options and moving towards agreement, and handling complex issues like cultural differences and multi-party disputes. This mentorship followed an intensive 5-day training in Colombo, refresher, and assessment program for SIMI accreditation, providing 24 participants with real-world guidance from six seasoned mediators from Singapore. These mentors, who are prominent lawyers, arbitrators, and specialist mediators with SIMC, helped participants refine their practical mediation skills during this 16-week program. We would like to make a special mention to our mentors - Francis Goh, FSIArb, FCIArb, Anparasan K, Ong William, Lei Theng Lim, Kevin Kwek, Jonathan Choo. This would not have been successful without their commitment and support! We are grateful for USAID's support through the EEJ initiative, which has greatly advanced ADR in Sri Lanka. The SIMC Mediator Accreditation Program provided participants with a strong foundation, combining theoretical training, assessments, and mentorship to ensure practical skills development.
