At a recent launch event organized by FAO and Biovision Africa Trust titled “National Agroecology Strategies: Lighthouses for food system transformation”, we learnt about the unprecedented momentum for agroecological national action in Eastern and Southern Africa. Agroecology is a sustainable approach to agriculture that incoporates nature. The National Agroecology Strategies are frameworks that strengthen a country’s policies related to food systems and outline specific policy interventions that accelerate food system transformation through agroecology. They drive improvements in food security, climate resilience, biodiversity, water usage, soil protection and farm incomes, among many others. The best part? These strategies target all parts of the food system, including agricultural production, natural resource management and governance, research and extension, education, value chain development, markets, consumption and food waste governance.
