Today, we submitted a joint statement during the UN Environment Programme (#UNEP) meeting negotiating an international instrument to end #PlasticPollution (#INC5). 📣 Alongside the Global Self-Care Federation and the IGBA - International Generic and Biosimilar medicines Association, we expressed our support for a plastics treaty, encouraging a harmonized, global approach that prioritizes patient safety and ensures continued access to medicinal and medical products. 🌱 The diversity in our health sector requires solutions tailored to each stakeholder's role, responsibility, and standards. Together, we can make significant strides in reducing plastic pollution and protecting both public health and the environment. Interesting news coming out of Europe this week: 🇪🇺 The EU has announced plans to shake up its approach to wastewater treatment, particularly involving the cosmetics and pharmaceutical industries. It's seen the European Parliament, Council, and Commission come together to agree on a new directive. A key part of it is the ‘Polluter Pays’ principle. Simply put, companies whose products contribute to water pollution, like those in cosmetics and pharmaceuticals, will soon be responsible for a major part of the cleanup costs. The plan is set to roll out by 2045 for plants serving larger populations (think areas with 150,000 people or more). Alongside this, there’s a safeguard to ensure that essential products, such as medicines, remain affordable despite these new financial responsibilities. Why is this a big deal? Well, it’s a major step in reducing tiny pollutants in Europe's water - those hard-to-catch, yet harmful, substances. It also shifts the financial burden of cleaning up water from the public to the industries that are polluting it. 🤔 The question is, could this approach be a model for other countries, including the UK? We’ve all read the reports of dangerous chemicals being found in our rivers. Do you think the companies responsible should do more to foot the bill? #WastewaterTreatment #Sustainability #Wastewater

The EU has a duty to protect its citizens against the impact of harmful PFAS substances. The large diversity of these substances, the stragic role of some of their applications, and different toxicological profile of certain categories such as fluoropolymers, lead to complex and uneasy questions about enforceability and proportionality. The PFAS restriction proposal, a landmark proposal to ban all PFAS, is going onto uncharted territory with huge delays. At Publyon, I worked on a blogpost to provide a more balanced overview of a technical and contentious debate. The current delays create uncertainty for citizens and businesses alike. At Publyon we try to provide the necessary context. #fluoropolymers #ECHA #REACH #PFAS
In February 2023, a proposal was submitted to the European Chemicals Agency to restrict to use, sale and production of all #PFAS substances, which catch regular media attention for health and environmental risks but are widely used in applications ranging from kitchen appliances 🍳 to complex industrial processes. This launched an extensive debate on how to balance mitigating the clear harm and pollution caused by a number of PFAS substances with their importance for the competitiveness, safety and security of some of Europe's critical industries. With a record number of contributions, a huge scope and considerable delays, the proposal finds itself in uncharted territory. Read this blog post to find out about: 📌 what the restriction proposal will do to protect the EU against the very real risks of many PFAS substances 📌 the complex case of fluoropolymers, which belong to the PFAS group: not generally recognised as harmful to health, but crucial and hard to replace in some key applications 📌 where are we currently in the REACH restriction procedure? 📌 what could this mean for your business? A Global Plastics Treaty That Protects Endocrine Health Wednesday, April 3 11:00 AM – 12:30 PM ET The rapidly increasing levels of plastic pollution represent a serious global environmental issue that negatively affects the environmental, social, economic and health dimensions of sustainable development. In February 2022, at the resumed fifth session of the United Nations Environment Assembly, a historic resolution was adopted to develop an international legally binding instrument on plastic pollution with the ambition to complete the negotiations by end of 2024. Our faculty, Robert Thomas Zoeller, MD; Robert Sargis, MD, PhD; Leonardo Trasande, MD; and Marina Fernandez, PhD will review effects of endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) from plastics in the endocrine system and the current state of the Plastics Treaty negotiations: https://bit.ly/3TmXMeW Learning Objectives: • Revise EDC effects on the endocrine system • Understand how doctors can protect their patients • Review current state of negotiations for the Plastics Treaty #EDC #EndocrineDisruptingChemicals #Plastics

The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has issued a final rule that will reduce ethylene oxide emissions from commercial sterilization facilities. The final rule will require 88 existing commercial sterilizers and two planned facilities nationwide to comply with stricter air pollution controls. The guidelines represent the strongest air standards enacted in U.S. history for ethylene oxide, a potent carcinogen. The new measures will reduce emissions at commercial sterilization facilities by more than 90%, the EPA said. The agency first proposed the emission standards in April 2023, outlining an 18-month deadline for facilities to comply. Facilities now have two to three years to meet these standards, depending on their size. The EPA said it extended this compliance window after receiving feedback from the industry, including the American Hospital Association and Premier. #EPA #ETO #sterilization #medicaldevicesafety #medicaldevices
