Measuring #innovation output is a challenge and it is even more challenging to measure the impact. In its 4th edition, the Oslo Manual introduced a definition for business innovation as a new or improved product or business process (or combination thereof) that differs significantly from the firm's previous products or business processes and that has been introduced on the market or brought into use by the firm. In this context, innovation translates as improvements made to outcomes in the form of either new goods or new services, or any combination of these. The  #2024 Global Innovation Index Report released recently by World Intellectual Property Organization – WIPO ranks countries based on innovation and this index is the average of two sub-indices – innovation input (the elements that facilitate innovation) and Innovation output (results of innovation activity within the economy), comprising a total of 78 indicators. While #India’s overall rank has significantly improved from 66 in 2013 to 39 in 2024, its rank is 86 with regards to the indicator “The extent to which businesses and Universities collaborate on R&D”. It is surprising to see that for the same question, India was ranked 49 in 2013! Does it mean that India has significantly slipped with regards to UIC (Uni-Industry Collaboration) in this indicator? Certainly not - as in the past 5 years of heading collaborative research in IITM Research Park, I have seen significant growth in #UIC and the same is true based on the annual reports of other IITs as well. Industry in the Research Park are working with Indian Institute of Technology, Madras Faculty as well as startups in solving problems across all engineering domains. Their employees are pursuing IITM Research Programs while IITM Students are innovating with them as project and research interns – more on this later… On delving into the methodology of the indicator referred above, I found that it is based on the answer to this simple survey question: In your country, to what extent do businesses and universities collaborate on research and development (R&D)? [1 = not at all; 7 = to a great extent] - so much for innovation... However, there is a dire need to grow and nurture university-industry collaboration across the country - and I can attest that it really works!! "𝐖𝐡𝐞𝐧 𝐚 𝐒𝐲𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐦 𝐓𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐒𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐥𝐝 𝐒𝐮𝐩𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭 𝐃𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐦𝐬, 𝐒𝐡𝐚𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐓𝐡𝐞𝐦 𝐈𝐧𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐚𝐝" It is with immense disappointment that I share this experience. Since October 2023, after the last Smart India Hackathon (SIH) ended, I began assembling my dream team—carefully selecting individuals I believed were the perfect mix of innovation, determination, and hard work. By August 8th, our team, consisting of Piyush Patel, Bhrigu Tayal, Abhinav K., Dhananjay Aggarwal, and our leader Ritu Gupta, embarked on this year’s SIH journey. From meticulously analyzing problem statements in intense discussions to spending sleepless nights (and days) preparing, we gave everything we had. The announcement that we were among the top 5 out of 500 teams across India was exhilarating, reaffirming our belief in ourselves. We were ready to represent not just our college but also showcase the innovative potential of students in India. Unfortunately, despite the Smart India Hackathon being an extraordinary opportunity, our university chose not to support us. Despite AICTE directives, multiple appeals, and unwavering support from our college administration, the university administration dismissed our requests to reschedule semester exams. The response? “100 students aren’t enough for us to consider.” Words that sting deeply, reflecting a system resistant to change and blind to what SIH truly represents—a platform for innovation, collaboration, and national progress. My team and I are heartbroken. This wasn’t just a lost opportunity; it was a dream shattered by an inflexible system. To the 21 teams from our university who faced the same heartbreak, I stand in solidarity with you. Innovation needs nurturing, not barriers. I hope that someday, such incidents push for a systemic overhaul—one that truly values and promotes excellence. What are your thoughts on how educational institutions can better support innovation? 🌐 MSME-TEAM Initiative: Boosting MSME Presence on ONDC In a major move to enhance the digital footprint of India's MSMEs, the Ministry of MSME has launched the "MSME Trade Enablement and Marketing Initiative" (MSME-TEAM) as part of the Central Sector Scheme "Raising and Accelerating MSME Performance." This new sub-scheme, valid until March 2027, aims to onboard five lakh MSMEs to the Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC) platform, with a focus on women-owned and SC/ST-owned enterprises. Key Highlights: ➡️ Onboarding Support: MSMEs will receive assistance for catalog preparation, account management, logistics, packaging, and design via Seller Network Participants. ➡️ Workshops & Outreach: Awareness workshops will be conducted, especially in Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities and MSME clusters, to reach micro and small enterprises across the country. ➡️ Inclusive Growth: Of the five lakh MSMEs to be assisted, 2.5 lakh will be women-owned, aligning with the initiative’s aim to foster inclusive economic growth.
