Telecom Sector Faces Potential Disruption Over License Renewal Recent media reports have raised concerns about a possible telecom blackout and the shutdown of ATMs in Pakistan due to the non-renewal of long-distance international (LDI) licenses. Many of Pakistan's LDI operators, whose licenses are set to expire in August, have yet to pay the overdue principal required for renewing their 20-year contracts. These operators are responsible for providing international telecom services, including incoming and outgoing calls. During a recent meeting of the IT standing committee, the PTA reportedly expressed concerns that failing to renew these licenses could "significantly impact" the telecom sector. This disruption could potentially affect around 50 percent of mobile traffic and render 40 percent of ATMs non-operational in the country. #News #ATMBlackout #InternetDisruptions #LDI #PTA #PaymentOverdue

After the Tariff hike by Telecom Operators which ranged between ~ 12 to 26%, avg 13 % across top 3 players, Are we mulling for an upward revision in subscription fees, from the DTH industry?. Well the TRAI has not intervened on the Telcos price rise and the principle of forbearance would prevail with others too. #Mobile #Tariff #Telcos #DTH #M&E

Starting today, July 1, 2024, new regulations by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) will enhance the security and process of SIM card replacement under Mobile Number Portability (MNP). These amendments aim to curb fraudulent activities related to SIM swaps and replacements. Key Changes: - SIM Swap/Replacement Definition: The process involves acquiring a new SIM card to replace a lost or non-working SIM card by the existing subscriber. - MNP Facility: Users can retain their mobile number when switching from one access provider to another within the country. - UPC Request Criteria: The Unique Porting Code (UPC) request can now be made only after seven days from the date of SIM swap or replacement, reduced from the previous ten-day wait period. TRAI’s Objective: The amendments are designed to improve the MNP process and prevent fraudulent activities by ensuring stricter controls on SIM swaps and replacements. Implementation: The new regulations, issued on March 14, 2024, come into effect today, July 1, 2024. The OTPs may be delayed or interrupted from 1st November'2024...!!! Telecom service providers have issued a warning regarding Potential Interruptions to the message delivery of OTPs etc. starting from 1st November 2024. TRAI's updated directive, which is scheduled to be implemented on November 1, will mandate the traceability of communications originating from key entities such as banks, e-commerce platforms, and financial institutions etc. This situation arises because numerous Telemarketers etc have yet to adopt the necessary technical measures to adhere to the new regulation. Industry statistics reveal that approximately 1.7 billion commercial messages are transmitted daily in India. The inability to deliver these messages could result in significant disruptions if the new regulations lead to blocking or delays. Please note.
