Yesterday, I embarked on my new journey as a Graduate of their Unpacking Racism For Action Impact Program. 6 Dedicated Wednesday Evenings and My Takeaways Were! 1.Learning How To Confront Issues of Racism and Implicit Bias Throughout The World. 2. Unlearning Behaviors Society Has Made Okay 3. Relearning History, While Feeling Uncomfortable and Full Of Anxiety 4.Recognizing It Is Okay To Take A Stance Against The Majority. 5. Understanding Allyship Is Important Throughout Any Movement. 6. Different Perspectives Can Have Contributing Solutions For Change. 7. Making The Pledge To Continue To Advocate Through Action . This is really important. There are legitimate debates to be had about DEI practice and theory, but there is absolutely no reason to back away from racial justice. In particular, there is no reason why monied foundations or other organizations should misinterpret and incorrectly over-apply the Supreme Court's ruling on affirmative action programs in public universities to back away from fair treatment and expanding opportunity for Black, Hispanic, and Indigenous Americans in any context. The majority of Americans, including many conservatives, believe that there is still much progress that needs to be made. Applause to MacArthur Foundation. #CommunityEngagement is a term widely used yet has vastly different interpretations. In my very biased opinion, to be effective agents of social change, it is important for us to recognize that we ALL ARE COMMUNITY MEMBERS and we each have beautifully diverse talents, skills, resources, power and influence that must be woven together to achieve our shared goals. When we engage with one another, for GHI, it means far more than transactional interactions or checking a box. It means earning trust, being in fellowship, developing an understanding of nuance, not shying away from tough conversations and centering those who are most effected by the inequities we aspire to eliminate. #BlackHistoryMonth2024! The life of Lincoln Alexander, the first #BlackCanadian elected to the House of Commons, is a story of overcoming adversity and achieving historic milestones. Born to Caribbean immigrants, he faced limitations but showed resilience from his early days in Harlem. His return to Canada marked the beginning of a transformational journey, including his service during WWII with the The Royal Canadian Air Force. After the war, Alexander embarked on an educational quest, earning a BA from McMaster University , followed by a law degree from Osgoode Hall Law Journal Law School. Alexander broke barriers in the legal profession before entering politics, where he made history as an MP and later as Ontario's first Black lieutenant-governor. He served as Chancellor of the University of Guelph from 1991 to 2007, holding the position for fifteen years, longer than any of his predecessors. In June 2007, he was granted the title of Chancellor Emeritus upon the conclusion of his tenure. He championed multiculturalism, youth, and seniors while advocating for equality. His legacy emphasizes the importance of determination, integrity, and education in combating discrimination.
