Science is essential for successful policy making and supporting the green and digital transitions we aim to achieve in Europe - that was a key insight during our visit to EU Science, Research and Innovation today. An integral part of the European Commission , the Joint Research Centre’s Petten site is part of the Energy & Health Campus , nestled in the beautiful dune landscape in Petten, 🇳🇱 . We got to see the laboratories for development renewable hydrogen fuel cells, to be used in cars, boats and industrial applications and the LILLA facility, a unique laboratory used to develop liquid led as a cooling agent instead of water: a key element to enable the production of small, modular nuclear reactors for use on industrial sites, which several EU Member States want to use to secure their energy supply. Why this investment in knowledge by the European institutions? Because we want policy makers to know what they are doing and make smart choices for where we are heading. The research also forms the basis for strategic foresight and policy development. Because we want to be able to ensure that products based on new technology meets high safety and performance levels, once used in goods produced and sold widely on our markets. A key goal of the research at JRC is therefore to develop solid, reliable product standards. Through Open Access, the facilities are also accessible to research institutes access and SME’s as well as to Member States taking part in common projects; thus pulling together to achieve innovation. There are truly a mind-boggling range of activities going on at this and the other JRC sites, such translating the data collected in situational awareness reports, eg on climate disasters; generatieve AI and how to apply advanced data analysis to detect and fight disinformation.
