Today marks the start of the UN Climate Change Conference (#COP29). 🌍 This year, we are part of the Action On Food Hub which unites all voices within the food system community, including the food industry. Together, we are working towards the main goal of more sustainable, resilient food systems. We couldn’t do this work without strong partners like Impossible Foods. Together, we will bridge the gap between the negotiations and civil society to ensure policymakers know the crucial role plant-rich diets can play in mitigating the climate crisis. We’ll be in the Blue Zone throughout COP29, putting food centre stage during these crucial negotiations. As my time at #COP29 came to an end I have reflected on why it is it important for U.S. dairy to be represented at these international convenes. With climate challenges requiring more urgent action than ever, USDEC prioritizes the UN Climate Conference each year to champion the role of nutrient-dense dairy products and trade in delivering sustainable food systems. With a world seeking nourishment that is not just good for people, but also good for the planet, USDEC is part of this COP process to ensure that global action and policies incorporate U.S. dairy producers’ experiences and contributions. 🐄🌎

How is that we’ve come to separate climate from biodiversity, as well as other issues like food systems when they are so clearly interrelated? The world will be watching #COP16, where we have a unique opportunity to strengthen the interconnectedness of climate, nature and food systems action towards #COP30 and the midpoint of this decisive decade.

Can #COP16 help end our siloed approach to climate, nature and food systems? As we head to Cali, we’re excited to be working with so many brilliant people towards ensuring our efforts to protect nature are aligned with climate action, while placing food systems transformation at the heart. At COP16 in Colombia, we have a historic opportunity to drive forward this new era of integrated action on nature and climate and pave the way to a successful COP30 in Brazil. The globe is in need of food systems that can meet food demand of 9 billion people by 2050. The need to produce efficiently without harm to nature( key asset)is a priority while building resilient food system to withstand the challenges/ effects of climate change. We must also think inclusivity as over 70% global of food is produced by small holders farmers with limited access to finance/appropriate investment.

It is urgent. It is possible. It is inevitable. We are calling for COP29 to go meatless. Why? Our global food system has the potential to either be a carbon sink and reverse the effects of global warming OR continue to be a leading cause of the climate crisis. "Even if fossil fuel emissions ended today, global food emissions alone would make the 1.5°C limit impossible and even the 2°C target difficult to realize." — Plant Based Treaty Climate resilience or large-scale animal agriculture. The choice is ours. Why COP29? Because what greater statement to the world than to heed the evidence? What more powerful way to remind the public that the COP Presidency stands on our side than to implement the changes that climate science proposes? How? By bringing the conversation to the fore. Actively discuss animal agriculture in the context of emissions, resource reallocation, and human rights. By showing that a kinder world is a joyous world. Design a premium cruelty-free menu that both educates and delights. By depriving no one. Design a menu replete with lab-grown meat and dairy and mock meat options. Join Us. Make noise. At the UN Climate Change Conference #COP29 @FAO Director-General QU Dongyu stressed that the only way to reduce carbon emissions and restore nature on the path to limiting global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius is to transform our agrifood systems. This transformation to more efficient, more inclusive, more resilient and more sustainable global agrifood systems is increasingly recognised as essential for achieving the Paris Agreement and the #SDGs. The shift “holds solutions for the climate crisis and the interlinked challenges of food, water, land and biodiversity,” said QU Dongyu. Farmers, herders, fisherfolk, and producers are on the frontlines of the climate crisis, and all too often, are among the 730 million people facing hunger today. FAO Director-General said that transforming agrifood systems requires more financing and investments that reach agricultural communities, leveraging private investments, and help in repurposing agricultural investments. Qu stressed that agrifood systems must be integrated into national plans and prioritised in multilateral environmental agreements. Every Nationally Determined Contribution should reflect the full potential of climate action from agrifood system transformation. 📆It’s day 4 of #COP29, and our friends at Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition (GAIN) are on the ground ready to keep the momentum going and ensure food systems and nutrition are central to conversations! 🌎 Since COP27, GAIN has been working on the Initiative on Climate Action and Nutrition, launched to establish the essential connections between climate change and nutrition outcomes 🌍 At COP28 it helped bring the Emirates Declaration on Sustainable Agriculture, Resilient Food Systems, and Climate Action to life and is now driving its implementation 🌏This COP comes at a pivotal moment, coinciding with the launch of the G20 Alliance Against Hunger and Poverty led by Brazil, who’ll host COP30 next year 🍽️ COP’s Food Day on Tuesday, the 19th, will be a key moment to see how global leaders prioritise food systems in the climate agenda #COP29 #COP #climate #food #foodculture
