VOICES from TANZANIA 🇹🇿 on the impact of #land acquisition practices in #extractives In Shinyanga, issues related to land acquisitions have been reported in the areas surrounding the Bulyanhulu underground #gold mine. RAFIKI SDO collected primary data in 2 adjacent villages: https://lnkd.in/ewMnvCvS Engagements with communities surrounding the Bulyanhulu mine revealed that the 2019-2020 land acquisition in the area has raised significant concerns and challenges regarding compensation, rights of women and children, and resettlement. Overall, communities affected by the land acquisition felt their social and economic vulnerability increased. The study’s findings also showed that women, children, and youth are amongst the most affected groups in the communities. These impacts include displacements, loss of livelihoods, reduced accessibility of basic services, social issues such as higher rates of student dropout from school, teenage pregnancies, and family separation, inequitable access to land, and a decrease in land tenure security. A Plea for Safe Passage: "The Cry of kwahu Afram Plains” Tucked away in the heart of Ghana lies the breathtaking Kwahu Afram Plains, a region of untapped potential, which also lies the Ntonaboma township, connected to the world by the lifeline of Obosom River. Yet, this vital waterway has become a conduit of fear, courtesy of a rickety ferry that threatens the lives of my people. As a native son, Abraham Ntiri popularly known as ‘Kontiri’, I've witnessed the struggles of our communities, who deserve better. The ferry, a primary transportation mode, is a ticking time bomb: - Overcrowding: Passengers packed like sardines and without life jackets , defying safety norms - Dilapidation: Creaky, rusted, and worn-out boats and canoes, prone to capsizing - Lack of Safety Measures: No life jackets, inadequate navigation, and untrained operators - Frequent Breakdowns: Stranding travelers, disrupting livelihoods Consequences: - Risk of drowning and loss of life - Injuries and trauma - Economic hardship due to disrupted trade and commerce - Limited access to healthcare, education, and opportunities Roads, too, are in disarray: - Potholed, dusty, and narrow, making land travel perilous - Frequent armed robbery attacks, claiming lives and livelihoods A Call to Action We implore: - Government agencies: Prioritize ferry replacement, road construction, and maintenance. The WaterStarters program, spearheaded by Amref and KCIC Consulting, is revolutionizing water access and livelihood development in Kenya. Aiming to create climate-resilient communities, this initiative focuses on co-funded borehole projects and economic empowerment strategies. Over the next seven years, the program is set to benefit 1.5 million Kenyans in water-stressed areas. By employing a franchise model that requires communities to co-invest at least 15% of the initial costs, WaterStarters fosters a sense of ownership and ensures the project's financial sustainability.   Our blended finance model and multi-faceted sustainability measures—including financial, social, environmental, and technological aspects—ensure long-term impact. Field visits to projects like Kibiko, Kumpa, and Nareto Latia showcase the success of community co-investment and empowerment initiatives. However, challenges such as community resistance to change and high diesel costs for water pumping persist. 🌱 Mangroves & Livelihoods: A Balancing Act in Anyanui, Ghana 🇬🇭    Did you know that mangrove logging is a primary income source for communities in Anyanui, but it comes at a high cost.     The loss of mangroves exposes these coasts to climate risks such as flooding, erosion and storm surges, creating a detrimental cycle that threatens both livelihoods and the environment.     Enter the Voluntary Community Mangrove Carbon Credit (VCMCC) project on a mission to fix this: Ocean Risk and Resilience Action Alliance project partners, The University of Education in Winneba-Ghana (UEW - School of Business) and Hen Mpoano are working with the Government of Ghana to empower farmers to switch from logging to sustainable practices like beekeeping and clam/oyster farming.     With funding from the UK’s Blue Planet Fund through ORRAA, this project will support over 300 people and protect 3,368 hectares of mangroves. 🙌    Together, we’re laying the groundwork for a resilient future for the community and wetlands of Ghana! 🌍      Learn more here: https://lnkd.in/eVMxBRPp    #SustainableIncome #CoastalCommunities #MangroveRestoration 

We are sharing this video with you for a sneak peek into our ongoing initiative on training community fire volunteers in Ghana. Our belief is that communities living closest to nature are its first stewards. They depend on the land, forests, and environment for their livelihoods and well-being, and they hold significant knowledge about sustainable management of these resources. In Ghana, particularly in Atebubu and Sene West Districts, we are mobilizing and facilitating members from 17 communities as community fire volunteers. We're empowering them to protect their land and forests from fires by training and equipping them with skills, knowledge, and resources, and building on their own experiences. A special thank you to the Ghana National Fire Service and Nature & Development Foundation for their invaluable expertise and collaboration. In Central Mozambique, Plan International is working with authorities and communities to rebuild schools that were wrecked by Cyclone Idai a year ago. At this school in Beira district, 14 classrooms were damaged or destroyed forcing 3,000 children to miss school for a month. Plan International stepped in to provide tarpaulins to create temporary classrooms so the children could resume classes. Plan International started work on rebuilding the formal classrooms, eight have so far been completed and six are being worked on. Construction work follows the Build Back Better approach, guidelines created by UN Habitat which aim to ensure that buildings are disaster resilient. #Education #EducationForAll #InclusiveQualityEducation

My team and I had the invaluable support of local community members for ground truthing. Their insights significantly enhanced the accuracy of our spatial data, leading to more precise and effective land use strategies. Involving community members in the land use planning process is crucial for several reasons: - - Community members possess intimate knowledge of their land and its history, which is indispensable for accurate and effective planning. - When communities are actively involved, they feel a sense of ownership and empowerment, leading to better acceptance and long-term sustainability of the plans. - Engaging local communities ensures that cultural and social aspects are respected and integrated into the planning process. Working collaboratively with the community enriches the project outcomes while strengthening the relationship between land use planners and the community thereby building trust and cooperation. Day 9: Community-Led Infrastructure Development 🏘️ **Community-Led Infrastructure Development** In some regions, communities are taking charge of their development by building essential infrastructure such as storage facilities and roads. These grassroots efforts often lead to more sustainable and context-specific solutions. For example, in Malawi, farmer groups have constructed warehouses to store their produce, significantly reducing post-harvest losses. Such initiatives demonstrate the power of community action in addressing local challenges and improving market access. One of the most important things about the Forest Garden Approach is addressing where, when, and what trees we plant. We currently work in Kenya, Mali, Senegal, Tanzania, and Uganda. These regions are where we see the highest need and most impact with our work. Thousands of trees are planted on each person's farm that we work with. These trees are planted in specific areas during specific seasons on the farmer's land that maximize benefit for the tree, the land, and the farmer. New Publication Alert! Our ESDS project of GIZ Kenya, in partnership with SNV and WEEE Centre recently conducted a study in Kakuma and Kalobeyei areas to address the growing #eWaste problem in #refugee camps. This new publication provides a summary of the key findings which include, among others, the level of awareness on e-waste management practices which was reported to be relatively lower among households than businesses and social institutions.
