Earlier this month we brought together farmers, policy makers, researchers and industry for an event focused on how agriculture can provide solutions to water management and pollution challenges. The event covered everything from legislation to how processing chicken litter via anaerobic digestion can be used to reduce phosphate loading and improve water quality. Huge thanks to everyone who joined us at the event, whether as a speaker or an attendee, there was a real buzz of insightful discussion throughout the day. I was here today to talk about the farming rules for water and some of the legislative changes around diffuse pollution. By productive research ongoing here at the RU with nature based solutions, constructed wetlands, engineered biofilters dealing with agricultural runoff and agricultural wastewater, encouraging circularity within farms and how we can reduce waste water sustainably. Someone my key takeaways would probably be the need for partnership, working and understanding everyone's different opinions and the reasons why we have to do things and how legislation fits into that. We have launched a project within the AD to. Use more chicken litter, which is going to be lower cost for us, but that brings externalities such as polluting water due to excess phosphate. So if we can capture that phosphate, refine it and then use it as a natural fertiliser to displace fossil fuel fertilisers, not only are we boosting our own AD business but also doing good externally. We've established a 7 1/2 acre growing area to demonstrate agroecological horticulture. Jason said, well, our culture university, it's really there as a demonstration site to show how you can grow a really fantastic nutrient dense vegetables are really good for people's health from managing the soil without digging, but also to build the micro risal associations and biodiversity in the soil to actually help manage the the soil for food production and to ecological recovery.

BC Food Web is excited to release the 6th research brief in their series! A study conducted in Delta, BC found that enrolment in agricultural stewardship programs improved on-farm climate mitigation and adaptation. Specifically, farms experienced an increase in soil organic carbon stocks by 60-70% and improved soil water regulation.
