The Institute of Economic Affairs (IEA-Kenya, with support from @USAIDKenya under the #ClosingGaps in Devolved Health Service Delivery Program, is hosting a two-day capacity-strengthening workshop for Isiolo County Civil Society Organizations. The training focuses on enhancing participants' knowledge of the budget cycle, its link to budget-making and social accountability processes, health financing (with an emphasis on own-source revenue), and effectively accessing, understanding, and utilizing health and budget information. By bolstering their capacity to identify key health priorities, the workshop empowers them to advocate for better health resourcing, efficient spending, accountability, and good governance, ultimately driving better health service delivery in the county. The project is being implemented in partnership with @Concern and Development Transformation. #EquitableHealthServicesKE

"Abandoned PHC is just one of our problems" – Community Leader. In Oyediran Village, Osun State, the challenges are multifaceted. Mr. Taofeek Amao, a community leader, underscores that while the abandoned Primary Healthcare Center (PHC) is a significant concern, it is merely one piece of a larger puzzle of issues. The village contends with a failing road network, lack of electricity, and inadequate access to clean drinking water. These conditions have forced many residents to relocate, further decreasing the village’s visibility and the likelihood of receiving much-needed government intervention. In a comprehensive report, frontline journalist Noah Aderoju delves into these pressing issues, highlighting the critical need for restoring healthcare services and addressing the broader infrastructure deficits. The story calls for immediate and coordinated action to uplift Oyediran Village and similar communities. Here is a thought piece from my colleague Benon Kalangari Tumwine and I on how optimizing performance of private wings in public health facilities potentially reduces the adverse effects of an ever tightening fiscal space and a shifting donor-aid landscape. Domestication of resources to finance health programmes for improved population heath has recently emerged as a top strategic priority in fragile and resource constrained health systems. #USAID #KPMG #Palladium #LSEDepartmentofHealthPolicy #ACCA #EdinburghBusinessSchool #HealthSystems #MinistryofHealthUganda #WorldHealthOrganisation

The healthcare crisis is perhaps the most heartbreaking and visible evidence of the neglect that Western Kenya endures. Unlike other regions, Western lacks a single ICU or HDU in any public hospital. There are no trauma centers, high-end labs for medical diagnostics, or even public mental health facilities across the five counties. Basic healthcare services are a challenge, with countless lives lost to preventable conditions due to a dearth of emergency medical resources. In a region where healthcare infrastructure is practically nonexistent, illnesses that would otherwise be treatable turn into death sentences, adding to the frustration and despair of the local population.

As I get ready to leave Nairobi after few productive sessions building capacities of the Health system, I am reminded yet again of the gap between Training and Capacity Building. At the end of the day, we need to be accountable for the following; 1. How can the state and various agencies leverage 'Built Capacities' to deliver Health services and respond to emergencies with speed at scale? 2. How empowered and valued do community health workers (and other practitioners on the frontline) feel and how does that translate to meaningful outcomes for communities and people in need? 3. Do beneficiaries see a change in access to decent care? 3. How are agencies working independently and collectively to build on all the investments made over the years to elevate outcomes? Or do we find ourselves doing the same thing over and over again and expect better results!

Strengthening health systems is complex, nuanced and multisectoral work but the value of partnerships that design integrated, responsive solutions like Supply Chain for Community Health Workers in Liberia is clear as can be: 90% reduction in stock outs.
More than 1000 CHWs trained on the Electronic Community-Based Information System (eCBIS) digital tool! The Supply Chain for Community Health Workers (SC4CHW) solution was implemented in Liberia to increase CHW access to lifesaving health products. Here are some of our achievements: - We introduced a new cadre of health worker, Country Supply Chain Specialists, to support supply chain capacity building. - We institutionalized governance structures through establishing a Supply Chain Technical Working Group. - We successfully advocated for the integration of CHW commodities into the new National Public Health Supply Chain Master Plan 2023 – 2028 (SCMP).
